ENGR 131 Fall 2013 No Impact Children NIC DUE Date 11A Oct 29 Section 005 Team 18 Milestone 3 M3 Concept Reduction This Milestone is due at the same time as Homework11A but will be submitted in Assignment Dropbox HW11 Milestone3 Bring a printed copy of M3 in your Design Notebook to Class 11A For Milestone 3 teams should be balancing benefits trade offs by systematically comparing alternatives using strategies such as Pros and Cons and the Weighted Decision Matrix Informed designers explain and justify their design choices in relation to project criteria and constraints They find ways to articulate and balance both benefits and trade offs of all ideas before picking a solution to develop Milestone 4 To do this teams take the many solution ideas see Milestone 2 and 2 the problem statement they have iterated upon see Milestone 1 For this milestone teams will generate solution ideas and assess whether these ideas will achieve their goals and select a final solution idea to pursue Record your responses in the Design Worksheet Save this completed Milestone 3 document as M3 teamnum doc Also submit the Weighted Decision Matrix document as WDM teannum xls along with Milestone 3 Bring printed copies of each document to class 11A A M2 Iteration Revise your Milestone 2 document based on the feedback you received from the Instructional Team Document major changes in table provided including section change and rationale for change B Pros Cons Choose 5 8 solution ideas from Milestone 2 if you have generated additional solution ideas make sure to include them in your M2 iteration Create a chart of the pros and cons for the various solution ideas with a description of the various criteria you will be considering in this process Reduce your viable solution ideas down to 3 5 with written justification for the reduction to be used in your weighted decision matrix C Weighted Decision Matrix Using criteria constraints developed in Milestone 1 or revised since a weighted scale for the criteria constraints metrics that are measurable rank the 3 5 solution ideas your team chose after your pros and cons work Provide a written justification of the final rankings and your team s reflection on the results D Final Selection Share the solution idea that you will proceed to develop as your solution The description should be as comprehensive as you can be at this time Do not just copy from Milestone 2 You may have updated revised the idea Included in this final selection should be a written justification on why this is the best solution idea to pursue at this time E References Cite all sources you referenced for your work on this Milestone in APA format This is how you would cite an observation M Hynes observation October 15 2013 a conversation with a teacher Teacher Name personal communication October 24 2014 Observations and personal communications are not included in the final Reference list but you should include them in this section for M2 if you have completed any observations F Individual Contribution What did each team member specifically contribute to M2 Hynes October 2013 pg 1 M3 Concept Reduction ENGR 131 Fall 2013 No Impact Children NIC DESIGN WORKSHEET Team 18 A Describe the changes your team made to Milestone 2 You must describe at least three changes in detail however the expectation is that you are addressing all the feedback and continually revise this Milestone 2 document as you progress through the project M2 Section C Changes made or description of changes made D Looked up additional information to provide more credibility to statements we made explaining our ideas and cited those in the references We included more specific reasons for why the sketches helped determine which ideas would be better than others for example including our knowledge or lack thereof of physics concepts or certain manufacturing processes C We included 5 more sketches of our prototype ideas along with descriptions of them Rationale for changes made We hadn t realized all 8 sketches were needed and so originally only included 3 We originally had no references Our first draft was too general in reasoning B Pros and Cons Describe the pros and cons associated with 5 8 solution ideas First describe the general criteria constraints qualitites etc that you will be considering as you discuss the pros and cons of each solution idea Our criteria are that our final product teaches the concept of water conservation through reinforcing the concept is fun and appealing to children aged 3 5 costs less than 20 to make materials are accessible at places within 10 minutes away and the time it takes to create the product is less than 6 hours Our constraints are that the product is safe for 3 5 year old children and it can be used in a preschool classroom Pros Cons Table Solution idea Toy that restricts water flow Hynes October 2013 Pros actually conserves water in theory simple design can be different colors or designs to appeal to different children portable and should be cheap so can be applied in households or taken on trips pg 2 Cons would probably just increase water pressure instead of decreasing flow because idea based on a smaller area for water to go through may not be that exciting or fun to a child or be able to visually portray the concepts well probably would be made of plastic and the process of making this could harm M3 Concept Reduction ENGR 131 Fall 2013 No Impact Children NIC Draining fish tank visually displays the concept of running out of water very well fun for the child to have their own fish or Spongebob if hooked up to the faucet it won t waste any water in its usage can be any size or shape so it gives us a lot of room for creativity as well as for making it perfectly appealing to teachers and children Mad lib activity that the entire class or small groups can do or even just one child with their parent s versatile easy to construct only paper and ink cheap to manufacture doesn t require a lot of hard to come by resources or resources that would greatly damage the environment stories would be funny and capture children s attention without taking up too much time having a book of many mad libs provides the opportunity to do a bunch in one day for just one lesson or a couple each day or once a month etc very versatile solely based on being fun for the kid would work well in small groups could be used over and over again children are already familiar with the concept of board games Board game Grow a plant with
