The 1960’s were a period of change in the country, Broadway was producing musicals and comedies, the emergence of Rock and Roll, great composers were getting older and dying just like the audience, and political tensions drew people away from the theatre. II. Neil Simon had a 40 year career. He wrote completely comedies. Most of his plays were about contemporary New York experiences, which makes him popular. His best works are Star Spangled Girl, Barefoot in the Park, and the Odd Couple.III. Off Broadway was in the Broadway area or on Manhattan Island that had fewer than 500 seats. These were noncommercial. Off Off Broadway was very small store front spaces. This was an opportunity to get your work shown not to make money. These theatres were not in a specific place and they still exist today. IV. Avant Garde means the cutting edge. Happenings was a group with the first identifiable piece of art. They had loosely structured plays without a scrip and they were non repeatable because they required the audience to be heavily involved. V. Living Theatre was founded by Beck and Malina. They moved from a competitive to a communal experience. They shattered audience’s false illusions. These are still around today but not anywhere near as influential as they were. VI. Joseph Papp created New York Shakespeare festivals and the Public Theatre. These wereoff Broadway shows. It became an institution that once contained many important works. He wanted two things: aggressively pursue more than white actors and encourage communal sense (help others).VII. Regional Theatres were due to the creation on the NEA which was funded by the government. As a result of the NEA, everywhere had access to topical, professional theatre. This became the moving grounds for shows that may go to Broadway. This increased trouble because cuts in funding on the national and state levels hurt this business. Some notable stages were The Guthrie, The Alley, Arena Stage, and Actors Theatre of
