Weinberg Course website: http://www.lsic.ucla.edu/classes/fall09/ Course material such as lecture slides, discussion reading and quizzes will be posted on the website. Bruincast: The lectures will be video streamed and available for download as a podcast. This is meant as a study aid and not a substitute for coming to class. I will cancel the service if it is used inappropriately. Instead, I observe the following grading scheme: A 90-100% B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F <60% There will be opportunities to earn bonus points throughout the quarter. Your final grade will be calculated from the following: € Total Point s =Earned point s + Bonus point sNumber of point s from assignments×100% Essay You are required to write an essay on “One Renegade Cell” by Robert Weinberg. The essay is due at the beginning of lecture on Tuesday, 10/20/09. Late papers will be accepted at my discretion and subjected to a penalty of 5%/day (including weekends). Discussion Sections Attendance at all sections is required. In order to ensure optimal interactions with the TA and other students, you must attend the section in which you are enrolled and read the assigned paper before each discussion. Quizzes At the end of each discussion you will receive a take-home quiz. The quiz is due at the beginning of discussion the following week. You are encouraged to collaborate with your classmates on the quizzes. However, each quiz must be in your own handwriting and you must understand the concepts in your answer. In-class Exams All in-class exams are closed book, and cumulative. IN-CLASS MIDTERM: Tuesday 11/17 12:30-1:45 pm FINAL EXAM: Friday 12/11/09 11:30-2:30 pmHonor Code Every student of this class is subject to an honor code. This means that you will not engage in any activity that confers an unfair advantage onto yourself. This includes consulting any individual who isn’t 1) enrolled in MCDB 100 F09 (this includes posting questions on online forums) or 2) a member of the teaching team, for help with an assignment or the clarification of a concept. You are permitted (and encouraged) to work with one another and consult any book, research paper or website. When you submit an assignment or exam, you will be asked to sign a statement acknowledging that you have understood every single concept in the answer that you provided. If it becomes obvious in a subsequent quiz, paper, discussion or exam that such was not the case, not only will you not receive credit for that assignment, but you will also LOSE ALL THE POINTS you have gained pertaining to that concept in all previous assignments. Regrade Policy Regrades are to be submitted to me with a note specifying what was mis-graded (excluding mathematical errors). The ENTIRE ASSIGNMENT/EXAM will be regraded, following which you will meet with me and go over the assignment orally. All regrades must be submitted by 4 pm on 12/3/09.
