MCDB-100 Syllabus Summer 2010 MCDB 100 – INTRODUCTION TO CELL BIOLOGY SYLLABUS – SUMMER 2010 Professor: Jennifer Stevens, Ph.D. Office Location: 206 Botany Email: [email protected] Office hours: Mon/Weds 2:00-3:00pm Lecture meets: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30am-12:50pm – Botany 325 TA: Estreya Kapuya DIS 1A T 2:00pm – 4:00pm Boelter 5273 DIS 1B Th 2:00pm – 4:00pm Boelter 5273 TAs Office hours: To be decided. Class website: http://www.lsic.ucla.edu/classes Course materials such as lecture slides will be posted on the website prior to class. Textbook Required: Molecular Cell Biology; Authors: Harvey Lodish, Arnold Berk, Chris A. Kaiser, Monty Krieger, Matthew P. Scott, Anthony Bretscher, Hidde Ploegh, Paul Matsudaira 6th Edition; W.H. Freeman and Company Course Requirements: 5 Quizzes 1 Essay 1 Midterm 1 Final Exam (Cumulative) Grading: Weight for the final grade will roughly be the following: Quizzes - 15% Essay - 15% Mid-term - 30% Final - 40%MCDB-100 Syllabus Summer 2010 Mid-term and final exams will consist of a mix of multiple choice questions and short answers. They will cover materials from the lectures, readings, and discussion sessions. The final exam will be cumulative. Exams must be written in ink, no pencil allowed. Makeup exams are NOT given. In the case that you are unable to take an examination or have an illness or emergency, you are responsible for contacting your TA before the examination. A written verification regarding the illness or emergency must be provided. If you feel that a mistake in grading has been made on your exam, submit your exam and a typed explanation to your teaching assistant by Friday (5pm) of the week following the exam. When you submit your exam for re-grading, the entire content of the exam will be taken into consideration. Written Assignment / Essay You will write a 3-4 page (double spaced) paper discussing a current primary research article of your choice in which the focus of the research is related to Cancer or Stem Cell Biology.
