Lecture l A In the late 1800 s early 1900 s the Japanese were immigrating to California These would usually be family units who would learn the language and buy land so they could These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute hire people for agriculture purposes California wanted to pass an act saying Japanese children were no longer allowed in public schools in California Roosevelt did not want this to create bad ties economically with Japan so he arranges a Gentleman s Agreement In this agreement he puts pressure on California to let the children back in schools and makes a deal with Japan where they agree to voluntarily agree to restrict the number of people immigrating to the U S B Japan sent in troops to the Korean Peninsula which made us worried that they would try and take over the Philippines next In the Taft Katsura Agreement Taft tells Japan that we would recognize Japan s sovereignty over Korea and he made Japan promise to not take over the Philippines C In 1907 Roosevelt does not want there to be any doubt that America is a strong country so he sends the Great White Fleet which consists of 16 battleship groups so about 200 ships in total on an expedition He does this while they re painted white so they would be peaceful so that other countries would know not to mess with America ll A Roosevelt s Domestic Policy consisted of the 3 C s The first C was Control of Corporations In the Anthracite Coal Strike this coal was used for heating homes in the winter and it was in western Pennsylvania Right before winter when people would need this coal miners asked management for a lower hours from 12 to 10 and for the same wages Management says no so miners go outside of the property and picket The company doesn t give in so Roosevelt steps in and gets involved because the government has control over Interstate Commerce Roosevelt declares a state of national emergency because people could freeze to death and said if they don t abide to his decision he would take over the mine and hire different workers So he made a deal that workers could have 11 hours and the same pay and the company finally agreed B Trusts were basically monopolies with the same board of directors so Roosevelt said this wasn t fair and tried to break them up He goes after the Northern Securities Company which controlled 100 of the railroad with the same board of directors The Supreme Court rules this trust needs to be broken up and that they need a different board of directors During Roosevelt s term 45 trusts are broken up in 8 years lll A The second C was Consumerism Upton Sinclair wrote a book called The Jungle which is written about the meat packing industry and swindles that immigrants have to deal with In his book he talked about how rats rat droppings and rat poison would go in the hopper which was what made sausage out of the dead pigs Many people would get sick because of this However because Sinclair s goal at the end of the novel was to say the government should be socialists they didn t know if it was true or not B The Attorney General investigated and discovered that the book was telling the truth He passes two acts the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act The Meat Inspection Act required all meat to be inspected and approved for consumer consumption and the Pure Food and Drug Act covers all food which must be inspected with spot inspections that happened randomly and if they failed they could be shut down The Drug Act made buying drugs safer now there s a box that carries the sealed drug and a push down cap to keep the drug from being tampered with lV A The third C was Conservationism Roosevelt set aside multiple lands that would later become National Parks like the Grand Canyon and he wanted to make sure all these lands were scientifically managed so he hires a man named Pinchot to take care of these lands B He also pushes for Water Resource Managements like reservoirs lakes and irrigation projects He did a petition for a group of people in Florida who wanted him to set aside a specific island so the Pelicans there would not go extinct So he sets aside Pelican Island and the entire Florida Everglades and sets up Fish and Wildlife Preserves to take care of these lands
