MTE 494 Advanced Methods of Teaching Mathematics Course Project 500 points 30 of course grade Your course project is meant for you to do a high quality implementation of the didactic triad it will address simultaneous relationships among learning teaching and curricular materials Specifically you will address The mathematics you want students to learn from your teaching and by interacting with materials you design and Materials you design that will support students learning what you intend as they interact with you and your teaching and Teaching you design that will end with students learning what you intend by using the materials you ve designed You will submit electronically this packet of materials please use this organization 1 The mathematics behind what you intend to teach Give a detailed account of the mathematics behind what you will teach If you teach conic sections then what are the mathematical foundations of conic sections their definition s important formulas or equations and their derivation etc If you teach then how is it defined How is it calculated 75 2 Ideas you want your students to learn and the ways of thinking you want them to have Overview of the ideas and ways of thinking that your unit will help students develop how these ideas fit with prior and future learning and why they are important 50 3 Materials and Teaching a Overview of your unit materials State how they are aligned with the goals you stated in part 1 25 b Class activities worksheets and homework assignments i Classroom worksheets Accompany each worksheet with a description of its purpose for student learning embed this within a task rationale table like those you included in the first draft of your project how you will shape your instruction around it and an example of a well answered sheet 75 ii Homework sheets Accompany each homework sheet with a description of its purpose for student learning embed this within a task rationale table like those you included in the first draft of your project how you will shape your instruction around it and an example of a well answered sheet 75 4 Assessment Based on a version developed by Patrick W Thompson 2008 MTE 494 Advanced Methods of Teaching Mathematics Course Project 500 points 30 of course grade Produce a test that assesses in relation to your learning goals what students have learned and ways of thinking they have developed 50 5 Appendices a Summaries of 3 articles related to your project up to 500 words for each Please include a PDF copy of each article scanned or downloaded 25 b Explanation of the extent to which your unit is aligned with the NCTM standards 25 c Description of group members contributions to the project Each member must describe their own as well as the other member s contribution s to the project work and final product 50 6 Presentation 50 Plan on a 10 12 minute PowerPoint presentation Use your judgment about handouts Your presentation should communicate the essence of your unit without going into the entirety of all the details Provide an overview of the intended learning and teaching sequence and illustrate only particular parts of it Your presentation will be evaluated according to its quality and how well it communicates the essence of your unit Submit your PP presentation to me by email on Wednesday 12 08 evening What to submit and where to submit it File names Name each file beginning with a two digit number that reflects the order in which I should read the files This is important I will read them in the order you state so if you mis number the files what I read will likely be incoherent 01 File name doc or gcf gsp etc 02 File name doc or gcf gsp etc 10 File name doc or gcf gsp etc etc Submission Based on a version developed by Patrick W Thompson 2008 MTE 494 Advanced Methods of Teaching Mathematics Course Project 500 points 30 of course grade Each group must submit one set of project files to me electronically as MS Word documents or gsp gc etc and a PowerPoint file for presentation attached to an email Please attach the documents in the same order that you have named them Additionally each group member must submit his her own version of item 5 c No grade will be assigned if this component is not received DUE DATE 12 09 10 Based on a version developed by Patrick W Thompson 2008
