MTE 494 11/09/09Draft of Lesson Sequence ProjectDue 11/27/09The contents of the draft of your lesson sequence must include the following:1. General mathematical topic of your sequenceBriefly explain the mathematics of your project and why it is significant. [10 points]2. Grade level and student backgroundState the grade or grades in which you will teach your lesson sequence, and the background your students will have. This means:o Describing key ideas students must already understand in order to begin your sequence. Note that this is not the same as the topics they will have studied.o Describing the style of instruction to which they will be accustomed. For example, will they be accustomed to working in groups? Will they be accustomed to working without clear prescriptions for what to do? [25 points]3. Duration of instructional unitState how many lessons your sequence entails and over how many days it will unfold. [5 points]4. The mathematics behind what you will teachGive a detailed account of the mathematics behind what you will teach. If you teach conic sections, then what are the mathematical foundations of conic sections—their definition(s), important formulas or equations and their derivation, etc. If you teach , then how is it defined? How is it calculated? π Identify sources you relied on to write this section. [60 points]5. What you intend students will learn and ways of thinking you intend them to haveExplain the ideas and ways of thinking students will develop, and how the students will express them using your materials in the context of your teaching. Be as specific as you can. This is the most important section. Simply mentioning the names of topics does not answer this part. [100 points]6. (a) The first two (2) completed lessons from your sequence Include all task worksheets that students will use and any accompanying materials (manipulatives, software sketches, etc). All of these items must be properly referenced (cite any sources you drew on, and activities you altered, extended, or used). Also include assessment/homework items (tasks or test questions) you will 1MTE 494 11/09/09use after the worksheets to help you determine whether students are learning and understanding what you intend. Include an example of a well-answered solution sheet. Preface each lesson description with a statement of what ideas the lesson addresses, and briefly describe how the second lesson builds on the first one.[150 points](b) Your teaching around the two lessonsDescribe how will you shape your instruction around your materials so that students learn what you intend. What will you discuss with the class prior to having students work individually or in groups on tasks? What discussions will you have with the class to follow up on their work? [50 points](c) Complete and include the following table for each worksheet you provide:Task Prompt/Student Action Reason for the Action(in terms of ideas and thinking)Task 1. Description of what students are asked to do (includes things they should observe, attend to, reflect on, and draw conclusions about)Explanation of how asking students to dothese things will help them learn the ideas and develop the ways of thinking you intend in Task 1. Note: this necessitates that you specify the ideas you want them to learn and the ways of thinking you intend they develop.Task 2...Task n Note 1: Item 6 (c) is really part of the requirements for 6 (b), so no separate points are allotted for it.Note 2: This draft must show significant progress over your project proposal. In particular, your work on items 4 and 5 must show progress that addresses any limitations pointed out in my feedback to your
