This course is about our written language; the business of this class is improving your writing skills. My goal is to help you begin from where you are right now in relation to writing, to have you exercise your written voice, to expand your writing competencies and to increase your overall levels of comfort and confidence as a writer and as a college student.Your responsibilities include…writing regularly, attending every class, reading the course calendar, completing assignments on time, asking questions, discussing ideas and behaving responsibly as a member of this class. Plan your time to assure full participation and preparation for this class. It is a standard expectation that college students study two hours outside of class for every hour they are in class. This time includes a required sixteen (16) hours of guided instruction outside of class. My role is…to provide guided instruction, serve as a writer’s resource and to learn along with you. I plan the class, participate in discussions, conference with students, offer feedback on writing, assess polished writing and prepare you for your portfolio assessment at the end of the semester. I follow the calendar for the class. I am committed to returning work submitted on time within one week of receiving it, unless otherwise announced. The Course Goals and Objectives…incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by JCC’s Board of Trustees, administration and faculty. These goals are in concert with four year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee that students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability and the professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs addressed in this class include: the ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and intelligibly using writing skills, work with genre study and the practice of a variety of writing strategies; the ability to implement standard written English inacademic writing; demonstrated awareness of the influence of different audiences and purposes on writing; demonstrated familiarity with writing process; the ability to read and comprehend subject material; the ability to ask constructive questions; demonstrated use of critical thinking skills; demonstrated success with research skills; demonstrated success with documentation and citation of research materials; the ability to collaborate with others; demonstrated exploration of at least one transcendent theme. Grading is…based on your participation, performance and growth as evidenced by the strengthening and extension of writing and communication skills, preparation and timeliness regarding assignmentsand activities, and a marked level of responsibility and concern for a positive learning experience. Each of these areas is discussed in detail in the next section of the syllabus. Each will factor into your final grade as follows: 10% Class participation 40% Papers  10% Writer’s journal and the 16 hours of Writing Extensions 40% PortfolioCLARIFICATION OF COURSE REQUIREMENTS: PARTICIPATION, PROCESS PAPERS, WRITER’S JOURNAL AND WRITING EXTENSIONS, PORTFOLIOParticipation means…arriving in class prepared. What you need to do is: 1) complete all assignments prior to coming to class, 2) come in prepared to discuss the essays, theories or writing for the day, 3) ask questions, 4) be a responsible and active member of your class.Non-attendance or lack of participation results in a 0 for participation.
