This is a three credit undergraduate course that is being offered on the World Wide Web for college credit or on an audit basis by Jackson Community College in Jackson, Michigan. The Course: In this course you will do both personal and formal writing. You will learn about various processes for writing and will practice using aspects of those processes in order to discover what works best for you. You will also become more familiar with what college instructors expect from you as a writer. A combination of information and practice will enable you to better meet those expectations. The Fall course will begin on January 9 and end on May 9. The course will be offered three times a year: Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters.Contacting your Instructor: Please feel free to contact me at the above e-mail address or by the telephone number also given above. I will try to return all messages within twenty-four hours. I want to help you with any problems you encounter with the course. Obviously, I cannot do this if you do not let me know that there is a problem.Goals: As a result of taking this course, the student will--become more familiar with his/her writing process—have a better idea of writing procedures that work for her/him—become more familiar with his/her strengths and weaknesses as a writer—develop strategies for maintaining strengths and dealing with weaknesses--be better able to see her/his writing, and the writing of others, from both the point of view of a writer and the point of view of a reader--be better able to make critical judgments about his/her writing and therefore be better able to make needed adjustment and revision.Associate Degree Outcomes: The Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certainessential skills while enrolled in the college. Several of these Associate Degree Outcomes are addressed in this class, includingcomprehending and using written forms of information; communicating clearly, concisely, and intelligibly using writingskills; working collaboratively with others; and using the Internet forresearch purposes.Instructional Methods: 1. Final journal-- Course evaluationAssignments: Every week there will be a reading assignment, a writing project, and required participation in an online forum. Reading assignments will provide you with important background information on the type of writing we are attempting that week or will help you better understand a particular writing concept. The textbook is your major source of information about writing. The journal is the place for you to practice writing while reflecting on the content of and application of material presented in the required 16 hours of workshops and activities. Projects are assignments that ask you to explore a topic and write a draft of a paper (a draft is an attempt to write an actual paper. It is not a collection of notes or scribbled randomthoughts). The forum is a place for you to interact with other students discussing a different topic each week or responding to one of the week’s readings. You will respond twice to each week’s forum. The first will simply be your own response to the topic or the reading; the second will be your response to the responses posted by your fellow students. All English 132 students must complete a total of sixteen hours of Guided Workshops and Practice outside of classroom time. These hours include workshop attendance, tutorial work in The Center for Student Success, and other personalized writing instruction as approved by your composition instructor. To help you accomplish this task over the course of the semester,we have devised a variety of activities. You will be mailed a list of these activities and a copy of the form you will have to complete. Please completethe form during the semester, remembering to get the appropriate signatures, and return the form to your instructor as indicated. These hoursare required and will count as 10% of your final grade.Format: Course instructions and assignments are online. Forum discussions will be online. There are no formal tests or final exam. Each week you will have text material to read, a forum discussion requiring your participation, and writings to complete.Writing assignments will be completed offline, then uploaded to the appropriate folder on the course site by the specified due date (assignments will be returned to students by U.S. Post). Assignments must be completed using Microsoft Word or saved as Microsoft Word documents (.doc extension) before they are uploaded. If you do not have Microsoft Word, you must save your files in Rich Text Format (.rtf extension) before sending them to me. The only exception to this is theportfolio, which you must produce in hardcopy and mail to:Bill WalkerWalker HallJackson Community College2111 Emmons RoadJackson, MI 49201When sending assignments to me always include your name at the beginning of each document. Keep a copy of all your assignments on your computer. Also label each assignment using Journal numbersand Project letters. Grading: Grading will be done in four areas: During the semester you will complete a number of major writings. You will receive feedback on these assignments, but none of them will be formally graded. Feedback provided by the instructor is designed to suggest possible revision should you decide to revise. You will continue to refine some of the assignments as the semester proceeds, then choose those you wish to be graded asa
