English 132 focuses on the research process and forms of academic writings. This means students will learn how to consider ideas and experiences of others as we frame our research into academic essays. English 131 strengthen your communication skills by highlighting your own experiences and ideas, (in narratives). This course gives your writing abilities by researching, analyzing, arguing, evaluating and informing. We will do four major papers in this class and shorter papers as well as a group project.Course DesignThis is a workshop intensive course. Workshop sessions by definition are cooperative ventures. I will help guide you, but you and your work will drive the course. Workshops by nature require your full mental and physical participation every day, both in and out of class. You will be required to work in groups both in and outside of class, and you will learn to give and take constructive criticism. It is standard practice that college students study two hours outside of class for every hour they are in class. You must put in time outside of class to do well in thiscourse. You must read your textbook, and apply the exercises therein to progress in your writing. You must spend time writing everyday to see significant improvement to your writing skills. You will need to spend time prewriting, writing and revising to get above a 2.0, which is a passing grade (C). My Part in this:I will facilitate discussions; conference with you; offer feedback; help you with prewriting, peer review, and editing skills: and prepare you for the portfolio assessment at the end of the semester. I will come to class prepared, supportive and energetic. I will care about your progress and I expect you to do the same. I want you to understand the reasons why you make the choices you do when you write. I want you to reflect on your writing, and the process. I want you to write to communicate thoughts, and ideas, not simply because you have a paper assignment. I want you to take pride in your writing and push yourself to get better. I want you to consider why you wrote, how you wrote and why you made the changes you did, and how these changes influence your purpose and/or your audience. Understanding the whys will help you organize your thoughts and learn vital critical thinking skills. This course can help you become a better critical thinker,a better communicator and a better student overall. English 132 is an important class, I take it seriously and expect you to do the same.Associate Degree Outcomes:“The board of trustees at JCC has determined that all JCC graduates should develop that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in college.”English 132 assesses the following Associate Degree Outcomes: ADO 1A: The ability to communicate clearly, concisely and intelligibly, using writing skills.
