Knapp, Anita L. Vangelisti.Catalog Description: Learn to improve communication in a one-on-one basis and in small group situations. Emphasizes concepts and techniques with people in a variety of human relations situations. Includes units on perspective of interpersonal communication, self-disclosure, creating messages, coping with conflict, intimate relationships, and the workplace.Course Objectives: JCC’s Board of Trustees has determined that all of our graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled here. These skills are called Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs). The ADOs for this course include (but are not necessarily limited to):- understanding the role of attitudes, self-concept, and self-disclosure in human communication;- improving your ability to read and send non-verbal messages;- functioning cooperatively within small groups;- developing and improving skills of conflict management.Preparation: Assignments and in-class activities revolve around weekly discussions and in-class assignments. Since much of our classroom time will focus on our weekly readings, we will all benefit most by being prepared. Please note that some in-class projects may not lend themselves to make-up assignments (such as group projects). In those cases, you will not have an opportunity to finish a similar assignment and will receive a zero (0) for that project. If you are absent on the day scheduled to take a test, you may make it up during the following scheduled class period. Only under the most extreme circumstances (e.g., serious illness) will you be allowed to schedule a make up test more than one class period following your initial absence. Arrangements for all make-up tests will be made on an individual basis and may require documentation of your absence before a make-up opportunity will be approved. If you are absent on the day scheduled to give your final presentation, you may perform it up until the last day of class. At that time, if you have not given your speech you will receive a grade of zero(0) for that performance. I will not accept the final paper after April 26 for any reason.Extra Credit: You have the opportunity to receive one (1) extra credit point for each Project Success Day workshop you attend, if your attendance, participation, and work products throughout the semester exhibit sufficient effort. Project Success Day is scheduled for Tuesday, February 7. Bring official attendance slips, signed by the workshop leader, to class on Wednesday, February 8 so I can record your extra credit points.Attendance and Participation: Your participation and performance on in-class activities are important to your overall success in this course; therefore, attendance and participation are counted as part of your final grade. If you can’t make it to class, please contact me as soon as possible. If you miss class, check our Educator site (see below) to get copies of appropriate assignments and documents. You might also want to contact one of your classmates to get notesfrom that day.Educator: Educator is the electronic component of JCC’s courses, and it will be our primary means of communication outside of the classroom.
