For Student Success: (517) 796-8415 Solution Center: (517) 796-8639JCC Switchboard: (517) 787-0800The course syllabus is a general plan for the course; deviations announced to the class bythe instructor may be necessary.Course Description:Learn to improve communication in a one-on-one basis and in small group situations. Emphasizes concepts and techniques with people in a variety of human relations situations. Includes units on perspective of interpersonal communication, self-disclosure, creating messages, coping with conflict, intimate relationships and the workplace.Course Objectives: JCC’s Board of Trustees has determined that all of our graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled here. These skills are called Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs). The ADOs for this course include (but are not necessarily limited to):- understanding the role of attitudes, self-concept, and self-disclosure in human communication;- improving your ability to read and send non-verbal messages;- functioning cooperatively within small groups;- developing and improving skills of conflict management.Course Assignments & Evaluation:Exam 1 10% Exam 2 10%Exam 3 10%Family Analysis project: 15%Interview project: 15%Final Research project: 20%Portfolio: 10%Class Activities: 10%TOTAL 100%Exams: Three examinations will be given throughout the semester. Each examination will consistof a combination of true-false, multiple choice, and short answer items. Exams cover material from class and the textbook. Class Activities: Throughout the semester, you will complete various class. These activities may involve individual or group assignments, may occur in or outside of class, and will vary in total point value. These activities will go toward your final coursegrade, and cannot be made up regardless of the reason for the absence.Emergencies: If an emergency arises and you know that you will not be able toget to class on an exam day or presentation day please let me know ahead of time by sending me an email or leaving a messageReceiving a Passing Final Grade: Students must complete all 3 exams, the family analysis project, the interview project, portfolio and final project to receive a passing grade.Attendance: Your attendance and participation are essential. Consequently missing class will have a serious impact on your final grade. I realize that things “come up” for all of us so you are allowed 2 absences without penalty. The following guide lists the penalty for excessive absences: 3 absences = drop one half grade. 4 absences = drop one grade. 5 absences = drop two grades. 6+ absences = drop three gradesPlease note that if you should you miss class, it is your responsibility to obtain missed materials from a classmate, not the instructor.Learning Accommodations: Any students who need special accommodations forlearning or who have particular needs are invited to share these concerns orrequests with me as soon as possible.Your attendance and participation are essential. Prepare and submit a typed argument indicating what your specific appeal is and what grade you believe you deserved. Turn in the appeal before or after class, during office hours, or at a scheduled appointment within one week of the grade being returned.
