In this course, students will examine basic verbal and nonverbal elements affecting communication between individuals in family, peer group, and work contexts. Specific units of discussion include intrapersonal perspective, conflict resolution, self-disclosure, message generation, intercultural messages and nonverbal communication.Course Objectives: JCC’s Board of Trustees has determined that all of our graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled here. These skills are called Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs). The ADOs for this course include (but are not necessarily limited to):- ADO 2: Speak clearly, concisely and intelligibly- ADO 9: Work productively with others, recognizing individual contributions to group success- ADO 10: Understand and respect the diversity and interdependence of the world’s peoples and culturesCourse Assignments & Evaluation: Course Grade Breakdown:Exam 1, 2, 3 (3 exams at 10%. each) 30% A = 100% - 95%Homework 20% AB = 94% - 90%Life Plan Portfolio 15% B = 89% - 85%Interview Project 15% BC = 84% - 80%Team Collaboration 10% C = 79% - 75%TOTAL 100% CD = 74% - 70%D = 69% - 65%F = 64% - 0Exams: Three examinations will be given throughout the term. Each exam will consist of a combination of true-false, multiple choice, and short answer items. Exams cover material from class and the textbook. I will announce what will be on each exam in class.Class Activities: Throughout the term you will complete various in class activities. They may involve individual or group assignments, and may occur in or outside of class. These activities will go toward your final course grade, and cannot be made up regardless of the reason for the absence.Emergencies: If an emergency arises and you are unable to get to class on an exam or presentation day, please let me know ahead of time by sending me an email or leaving a message. If you do not show up onan exam day or a day you are scheduled to speak, you will receive an “F” on the assignment, and cannot make it up.Attendance: Your attendance and participation are essential. Therefore, missing classes has a serious impact on your final grade. “Things come up” for all of us so you are allowed to miss 2 class periods without penalty. Each class period beyond that will result in your final grade being lowered by ½ a letter –Ex. A “B” will become a “BC” with 3 absences.An attendance sheet will be passed around during class. It is your responsibility to sign the sheet. Any question about attendance will be answered by reviewing the sheet. *If you miss class, it is your responsibility to obtain missed materials from a classmate.Learning Accommodations: Any student who requires special accommodations for learning, or who has a particular need is invited to share these concerns or requests with me as soon as possible.Grade appeals: If you want to appeal a grade you must make the grade appeal in writing. Prepare and submit a typed argument indicating what your specific appeal is and what grade you believe you deserved. Turn in the appeal before or after class, during office hours, or at a scheduled appointment within one week of the grade being returned. I will make a decision on your appeal within two weeks of its receipt.Class Climate: It is my goal to facilitate an open, engaging, and comfortable classroom climate. My standards may be rigorous, but it is my desire to foster a relaxed and fun classroom environment. Please be mindful of the effect your words have on your fellow classmates. Any statement, joke, or gesture that disrespects, offends, or denigrates another on the basis of gender, race, religion, sexual preference, age, orability will not be tolerated.If you have a concern at any time during the course, please speak with me directly during office
