DeVitoThe course syllabus is a general plan for the course; any changes will be announced to the class by the instructor. Course Description: Communication is essential to all human relationships and success. This class is designed to improve communication in one-to-one and small group situations. Emphasizes concepts and techniques with people in a variety of human relations situations. Grade Breakdown:Notebook 10%“My Life” Project 15%Group Project/Presentation 15%In-class Participation/Projects 15%Exam 1 15%Exam 2 15% Exam 3 15% 100%Associate Degree Outcomes: Jackson Community College’s Board of trustees has determined that all of ourgraduates should develop or enhance a variety of important skills while enrolled in courses. The ADOs (Associate Degree Outcomes) for this course include:- Speak clearly, concisely and intelligibly (ADO2);- Work productively with others, recognizing individual contributions to group success (ADO9);- Understand and respect the diversity and interdependence of the world’s people and cultures (ADO10);Attendance: Your attendance and participation are essential. Therefore, missing classes has a serious impact on your final grade. “Things come up” for all of us so you are allowed to miss 3 classroom hours without penalty. The following guide lists the penalty for excessive absences: 4.5 hours = drop one half grade 6 hours = drop one grade 7.5 hours = drop two grades 9 hours = drop three gradesExams: There are three exams in this course. Tests will cover material from the book, class lectures and discussions and activities. More information on test format willbe provided before the exam dates.Ethics: In this class it is unethical to use as your own, a speech, outline or paper that has been written in whole or in part by someone other than yourself. Doing so constitutes reasonable cause for course failure. Any student found plagiarizing will be dealt with according to JCC’s policy on academic honesty.Language and topics: It is inappropriate in this course to use obscene language or gestures, tell offensive jokes or stories or allude to sexual references that may be demeaning or offensive. To this end, please be mindful of what you say and how you say it.All assignment topics must be approved by the Instructor in advance.Assignments:“My Life” Project: This assignment provides an opportunity for you to look at your life thus far and how it has been shaped through relationships. Create a notebook, Power point presentation, lifeline or other creative medium that reflects5 individuals who have had or currently are impacting your life…either positively or not. This should reflect your entire lifespan and may include family members, friends, work relationships, neighbors and/or community members, and others in your life. The project should reflect not only who each person is but also in what ways they have are impacted you. The purpose of this assignment is for you to more fully understand your perception of who you are and how you have been influenced in relationships! You will be expected to turn in a “hard copy” of your project as well as share a 10 minute presentation to the class on September 26 or October 1.Reaction Papers: You will be asked to write several reaction papers throughout the course. In this assignment, you will be expected to write clearly and accurately. These will each be approximately one typed page in length and should include: 2-3 things you learned, how this information changed orsupported your previous perceptions, and how you can/will incorporate the information into your own life. Due as assigned.Group Project: Will be explained fully in class. Due November 16 and 19, 2007.Notebook: You are expected to keep a notebook of class handouts, completedassignments, reaction papers and other materials you will be receiving in class. Please arrange your work in a way that will be understandable to the Instructor and to you as a reference in the future.
