HIST 1312 1st Edition Lecture 5 Outline of Last Lecture I Miners A Copper II Ranchers A Barbed Wire III IV Farmers A Homestead Act B Timber Culture Act C Timber and Stone Act D Dry Farming Plessy vs Ferguson Outline of Current Lecture I Immigration A Irish B Germans C Chinese II Rise of the City A Tenements B Sanitation C Sewer System Current Lecture l A During the 1800 s there was an influx of immigration Many people started moving to America and one of the first groups was the Irish The Irish migrated to America because there was a potato famine and without potatoes they couldn t produce nearly as much food People were starving so they sold everything to start a new life in America They were Catholic so many oppressed them and because they were immigrants they worked for low wages and got paid next to nothing B Germany was not an official country until the 1870 s so during this time they formed alliances with other countries There was a war going on and Germans were forced to fight on their own land This devastated their land and made it hard for crops to grow These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute and now land was scarce America was advertising free land so the Germans who could afford the trip over left their native country for free land in America because land was a status symbol and in America they felt they would have status with this free land C The Chinese start migrating to America next The Chinese immigrants are primarily single men because there s a rebellion in China and if the emperor suspected you of being in rebellion he could execute you So many single Chinese men who could have been suspected of being a part of the uprising fled to America to avoid execution ll A With a huge rise in immigration the wealthy families who lived by the seaside moved away to the outer parts of town So their mansions were sold to speculators who turned them into tenements for immigrants The rented these rooms at 10 a month and immigrants only made about 12 a month so they would be spending all their money on rent To cut the costs they would have multiple roommates who would split the rent with them and make their lifestyle more affordable B With multiple people living in one room they would all have to share a mattress so disease spread quickly They also did not have showers or toilets so they would throw their waste and food scraps in the front or back yard Pigs would walk around eating this stuff so their meat would no longer be good and healthy to eat If these tenements were in cities living conditions would be even worse because everyone lives so close together and disease could spread like wildfire Cities became overcrowded and dirty so the poor people would live in these places Because of the increase of populations in cities there was an increase in crime and fires Cities had to hire more officials and create better methods of putting out fires C With all the waste just lying in the street or in basements someone had to create a better way to get rid of waste Thomas Crapper created the first toilet and sewer systems were made that connected the toilets to the rivers So the toilets would flush waste into the South side of the river because residents would collect water from the north side However the South side would flow north and the waste would end up in the water anyway So there was many sanitation problems at this time and these conditions were very difficult to live in
