HIST 1312 1st Edition Lecture 4 Outline of Last Lecture I Panic of 1873 A Greenbacks B Demonetarization of Silver II III Election of 1876 A Hayes vs Tilden Indians A Railroads B Battle of Little Big Horn C Battle of Wounded Knee D Buffalo Hunters Outline of Current Lecture I Miners A Copper II Ranchers A Barbed Wire III IV Farmers A Homestead Act B Timber Culture Act C Timber and Stone Act D Dry Farming Plessy vs Ferguson Current Lecture l A During this time many people started heading west miners amongst them Miners moved west to mine for copper which was the 1 ore mined at this time There was a high demand for it because copper could be used for many things including conducting electricity ll These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute A Ranchers moved west to create more land for their cattle and families This was the time of the open range and cattle were allowed to roam endlessly across the west because of this openness However because cattle would always be roaming around they would lose weight and cost less when trying to be sold and accidents would happen where a few or many of the cattle would die So to stop this open range J F Glidden invented barbed wire Ranchers could now make a fence around their property and their buffalo would stay enclosed because they wouldn t go near the barbed wire lll A Farmers moved west because creditors were coming after them and demanding they pay their dues and those who had not lifted a hand against the Union during the Civil War qualified for the Homestead Act The Homestead Act gave farmers 160 acres of land for free They had to live on the land for five years cultivating it and building their house but if they did that they were allowed to keep the land for free B The Timber Culture Act was another way of promoting settlement of the west In this act the government would give farmers 160 acres of land for free and all they had to do to keep this land was to plant th of their land in trees This allowed for more protection and allowed farmers to use these trees how they wanted C The last act the government passed to persuade people to move west was the Timber and Stone Act This act sold 160 acres at 1 75 2 50 an acre but it was on worse land and would be harder to cultivate The government used the money they sold this land for to build irrigation canals and dams that the farmers could profit from since water was scarce in the west D Dry farming is where farmers had to farm their crops in the dirt because they did not have a lot of water Over time dirt and dust would collect on the land and the farmers would have to farm over it lV Plessy VS Ferguson was a court case in which Plessy sued a Ferguson train company Plessy was a man who was 1 8th black he tried to board the train in the front but the engineer told him he had to sit in the back carts because he was black even though he looked white He sued and asked the court to define what percentage makes one black The court threw the case out and refused to answer his question
