BIOL 102 1st Edition Lecture 2 Outline of Last lecture:I. Theory of adaptation and EvolutionII. Charles DarwinIII. Natural SelectionOutline of Current Lecture:I. DarwinII. Evolving TraitsIII. Fossils Current LectureCharles DarwinAlfred Russell Wallace- One of Darwin’s colleagues - Darwin and Wallace had similar ideas and were both writing manuscripts- Darwin rushed to publish it because he didn’t want Wallace getting all the credit and for his work to be for nothing. - Published On the Origin of Species in 1859After Publishing: - After he published his manuscript Darwin continued to research and work but he kept tohimself and was very private. He wasn’t really heard from againDiscoveries? Right or Wrong?- Darwin was not completely right in his discoveries. He was on the right path but at the time he did not know about genetics (i.e. Mendel’s discoveries that would come later) and he was incorrect about the mechanism on how the environment changed (ex. tectonic plates). Evolving Traits- Artificial Selection: when humans select the traits they find desirable and want to pass on.- Ex. growing corn and choosing the most yellow or sweet tasting corn and only growing those. - Animals evolving:- Examples given in class:o Grey wolf: all dogs descend from the grey wolf  Primary ancestor for African wild dog, coyote, fox and jackal- Variation:- Same creature but different appearance, helps them in their specific environment. Ex. Garden snakes- some are brightly colored, some stripes; depending on the creature that preys on them.Fossils- Used to date time (what time period and how long ago that creature lived.)- Fossils are not just bones. Most fossils are bones because they are tougher to the elements and less likely to disintegrate.- Its just by chance whether or not something actually fossilizes. The environment, the weather, the organism its self; all of that has to work together at the same time to fossilize.- Transitional fossils- shows how an organism changes over time.- Vestigial structures- structures that have no function. Structure with a reduced or incompletely developed function- Human Vestigial Traits: Tailbone- once was where our ancestors had a tail, we no longer use it Appendix
