Evaluation Chapter 9 Chapter Objectives Learn How evaluation incorporates into the overall problem solving process Ethical considerations for solution development The ethics checklist questions The five P s of ethical considerations Evaluation Process Evaluation should occur throughout the life of a project Goals and accomplishments should be reviewed at the end of each project phase Future project direction needs evaluation before moving forward with the next project phase Decision points in the project should be reviewed to determine if the correct assumptions were made Determine if any new assumptions are now known Evaluation Checklist Some questions to consider during the evaluation process include Have you challenged the information and assumptions provided Does the solution solve the real problem Is the problem permanently solved or is this a patchwork solution Does the solution have impact Have all the consequences of the solution adverse as well as positive been examined More Evaluation Checklist Additional questions Have you argued both sides the positive and the negative Has the solution accomplished all it could Is the solution economically efficient and justifiable Does the solution cause other problems such as environmental safety etc Is the solution logical Is the solution economically environmentally and politically responsible and safe Ethics The evaluation process includes taking ethics into consideration This is done to prevent future conflict or arbitration should the solution cause problems There are 3 questions to consider for the ethics review Is it legal Is it balanced How will the solution make me feel Is It Legal First we need to determine if the proposed solution is legal and if it will violate either civil law or company policy If the answer is NO go no further with the solution If the answer is YES continue with the ethics questions Is It Balanced Next we need to determine if the proposed solution is balanced We also need to ask Is it fair to all concerned in the short term as well as the long term Does it promote win win relationships If the result is that one person may benefit from this solution more so than anyone else this solution may come back later to create greater issues for the individual or company How Will the Solution Make Me Feel Lastly we need to ask questions about feeling How will the solution make me feel about myself Will it make me proud Would I feel good if my decision were published in the newspaper Would I feel good if my family knew about it These questions target our sense of fairness and ensure we as individuals do not feel the outcome was at our expense The Five P s of Evaluation Points to consider when analyzing the solution Purpose What is the objective for which you are striving Pride Can you take pride in the solution you have developed Patience Have you taken time to think through all the ramifications Persistence Are you sticking to your guns and not being dissuaded Perspective Have you taken time to focus inside yourself Summary Evaluation is an important step throughout the life of a project The evaluation process should consider ethics in the decision making process There are five points to consider in the evaluation process
