Interview with ParentsPlease Read First: Thank you for agreeing to do this interview with me. As we went over in the consent form, I am interviewing families as an assignment for my Adolescent Development class at Montclair State University. If you do not want to answer any of the questions, please just say so and you don’t have to answer it. Are you ready to begin?1. HOW MANY CHILDREN DO YOU HAVE AND WHAT ARE THEIR AGES?- Two children. o Maggie is 14 years oldo James is 12 years old2. FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE AS A PARENT, HOW IS BEING A PARENTTO A TEENAGER DIFFERENT FROM BEING THE PARENT OF A YOUNGER CHILD?- In some ways, it is easier, and in some ways, it is harder.o Maura is glad that she no longer has to get her kids strapped into car seats every time they go into the car.o Maggie can now do more on her own and doesn’t need to be guided thorough every little thing (although she was always very independent)o It is harder because Maura never knows which Maggie she is dealing with (says somewhat jokingly) Maggie sometimes acts very mature, and like her age, and other times she acts like a five year oldo Has to deal with the constant complaints of Maura embarrassing her.  Maggie does not think that Maura is funny3. HOW HAS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH ___Maggie___ CHANGED SINCE SHE/HE HAS BECOME A TEENAGER?- Maggie is now grumpier- She is more argumentative - Maggie thinks that she knows “everything”- Maggie is constantly using her knowledge about everything to criticizeher mother- (example: her mother’s use of words)4. HOW OFTEN DO YOU AND __Maggie_ HAVE FIGHTS OR DISAGREEMENTS, AND WHAT ARE THEY USUALLY ABOUT?- A few times a dayo All before 9 am  Getting out of bed Breakfast (Maggie does not think that she needs to eat breakfast) Computer timeo Homeworko Her roomo Things that she wants to do that Maura does not think are appropriate for a 14 year old5. HOW HAS __Maggie’s_ RELATIONSHIPS WITH HIS/HER PEERS CHANGED SINCE SHE/HE HAS BECOME A TEENAGER?- More drama now than before. Who said what about whom matters much more now than it did when she was younger. 6. DO YOU KNOW __Maggie’s_ FRIENDS FAIRLY WELL? DO YOU LIKE THEM? WHAT TYPE OF INFLUENCE DO YOU THINK THAT THEY HAVE ON HIM/HER?- Up until recently, Maura knew Maggie’s friends really well. She knew them better than Maggie realized. More recently, because of Maggie’s change of school to a new high school, she doesn’t know her friends aswell.7. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE OF TEENAGERS TODAY, AS OPPOSED TO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER?- Today, adolescent’s worlds are much more complicate. They have to deal with so much social media. o Social media is everywhere When Maura was young, if two friends embarrised themselves, it stayed between the two of them.- Now whenever the kids make a mistake, it iseverywhere in a matter of seconds. 8. WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT IT MEANS TO BE A GOOD PARENT OF A TEENAGER?- Loving and frim9. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH _________ADOLESCENT BEING INTERVIEWED_______, WHAT WOULD IT BE?- Maggie would be nicer sometimes and understand that everything Maura does is for Maggie’s own good. 10.
