consumer protection laws
provides consumers with better information, protection from hazards,, competitive pricing, privacy, or permit lawsuits
deceptive advertising
manufacturers may not make false or misleading claims, withhold relevant information, or create unreasonable expectations
consumer privacy
right to be protected from unwanted collection and use of information about that individual for use in marketing
behavioral advertising
advertising targeted to particular customers based on their observed online behavior
Solutions to help consumer privacy:

product liability
legal responsibility of a firm for injuries caused by something it made or sold
strict liability
holds that manufacturers are responsible for injuries resulting from the use of its products, whether or not the manufacturer was negligent or breached a warranty
Class Action Fairness Act (2005)
- large class action lawsuits moved from state to federal courts - attorneys in some cases paid based on how much plaintiffs received or on amount of time
alternative dispute resolution
method for resolving legal conflicts outside the traditional court system (takes form of mediation or arbitration)

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

legal doctrine that means that employees are hired and retain their jobs at the will of the employer

protecting an individual's personal life from unwarranted intrusion
electronic monitoring
technology that enables companies to gather, store, and monitor employee activities
Drug testing is used on three occasions:

1. organization is doing something that will seriously harm others 2. employee has tried and failed to solve the problem internally 3. reporting the problem with stop/prevent harm 4. harm is serious enough to justify costs of disclosure

racial harassment
ethnic slurs, derogatory comments, or other verbal/physical harassment that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment
diversity councils
groups of employees responsible for developing and implementing specific action plans to meet organization's diversity plans
parental leave
when parents are granted time off when children are born, adopted, or during early months of child development
family leave

firms that would fully support both men and women in their efforts to balance work and family
