Front Back
Reversible Process
A process in which the products can react to form reactants.
equilibrium
a state in which forward and reverse processes are occurring at the same rate
reaction mechanism
The sequence of events that describes the actual process by which reactants become products
intermediates
a chemical species that is produced in one step of a reaction mechanism and consumed in a subsequent step
Rate Limiting Step
slowest step 1st or 2nd step the overall reaction is determined by rate of step; highest activation energy
Elementary Reaction (Elementary Step)
a reaction that occurs in a single collision of the reactant molecules
molecularity
the number of molecules involved in a specific step in a reaction mechanism
unimolecular
describes a reaction involving one reactant molecule
bimolecular
describes a reaction in which two reactant molecules collide
rate-determining step
The slowest step in a reaction mechanism
catalyst
substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself being consumed
equilibrium
forward and reverse processes occurring at the same time
A reaction with a small equilibrium constant is...
Lies to the left, is "reactant-favored" *Smaller than 1x10^ - 2
A reaction with a large equilibrium constant is...
Lies to the right, is "product-favored" *Greater than 1x10^2
heterogenous equilibria
reactants and products are in different phases
