Cell Parts and Functions

Parts of human cells and their functions. (Taken from lab manual)

Study Flashcards
Front Back
Plasma membrane
Membrane made of lipids and proteins that regulates the passage of molecules in and out of the cytoplasm
Cytoplasm
Gelatinous mixture that holds organelles
Nucleus
Stores and protects DNA
Centriole
Involved with nuclear division- origin of mitotic spindle
Chromatin
Package and arrange DNA (controls its functions)
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
Manufactures steroids, lipids, and all membranes of cell. Also detoxifies alcohol and drugs
Rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
Site for protein and lipid synthesis (ribosome studded)
Ribosomes
Assembles amino acids (production of proteins)
Golgi complex (apparatus)
Shipping and receiving- proteins
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of cell, acts like the digestive system, helps with cellular respiration
Vesicles
Transports materials across the cytoplasm
Lysosomes
Breaks down wastes
Microvilli
Absorption and secretion
