ENV U6220 THURSDAY, 7/21/05 – LAB #2: TOXICOLOGY INFORMATION PAGE 1 Name: _____________________________________ Lab 2:Availability, Scope, and Interpretation of Regulatory Toxicology DatabasesThis laboratory is designed to have you become familiar with EPA’s IRIS database. Your assignment, in your groups, will be to assess and compare the information available from IRIS. Each individual will hand in this set of pages as the lab report, reflecting both individual and group work. I. Go to the IRIS database, using the web address: http://www.epa.gov/iris/index.htmlII. Read the paragraph and click on the Introduction link at the end of the text. III. Read the entire text on the “What is IRIS?” page.IV. Each individual member of the group will be responsible for investigating two chemicals. You must now pick your first chemical. The major constraint is that no two people in your group can choose the same chemical. The best choice is a chemical that you have some interest in; if you can’t think of a single chemical you have heard of before, you must makea (semi)random selection by going to “List of IRIS Substances”, clicking on the letter that is the start of your mother’s maiden name (or the letter after for J, K or Y), and choosing the chemical on that page that corresponds to the month you were born in (January = first, February = second, etc.). List your first chemical here:Chemical name Reason for choosing1.V. Go to the Full IRIS summary for your chemical and read the entire IRIS entry. As you read, write down two questions (either chemical-specific or general) that you have while reading the chemical’s page:1.2.VI. Determine the specific information for your chemical on quantitative regulatory values and write them into the tables under IX. on the next page (if not given, write “not given”).VII. Now, you will choose another chemical to investigate. It must be different from those selected by anyone else in your group. Again choose on interest or (semi)randomly, this time using your first initial and the month of your mother’s birthday.Chemical name Reason for choosing2.ENV U6220 THURSDAY, 7/21/05 – LAB #2: TOXICOLOGY INFORMATION PAGE 2 VIII. Write down two more questions that you have while reading the second chemical’s page:3.4.IX. Determine the specific information for your second chemical on quantitative regulatory values and write them into the tables below.NoncancerOral InhalationChemical Effects RfD Confi-denceRfC Confi-dence1.2.CancerSlope FactorsChemical Tumor TypeWeight ofEvidence Oral Inhalation1.2.X. When all members have completed the summary tables for their two chemicals, the group will meet to complete the last part. If you are finished before others, continue to browse theIRIS web site, in particular, looking for answers to the four questions you came up with. Your group should have each person present his/her chemicals and his/her questions. As a member presents, work to find the answers to all four of his/her questions, using the web asnecessary. In the table on the next page, write down the answers to your four questions plusone question from another group member. Write a short essay evaluating the amount, quality, and usefulness of the information on theIRIS web site. The essay must be your own work, but it may incorporate ideas from others in you group. Be sure to include results from both your work and that of others in your group. If appropriate, compare chemicals in which you have an interest versus randomly selected chemicals. Use the back or attach another sheet if you need more
