Women on StageCurrent Lectureo Test next Tuesday, September 24.o In class on Thursday test reviewRestoration was about having a good time, because it of previousCommonwealth and it’s strictness to society. Women on London Stage- Video shown on how women fit in on the London stage.o The life wasn’t glamorous for women, they were thought of as whores and many were mistreated.- Issues- o The actress would work her way up in theatre, and she would be courted by many men, some eventually became mistresses.o Often times when this happened they would leave the stage completely.o Companies were constantly looking for more actresses.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.o Wealthy men would go back stage to watch women change… this led to women being snatched by force. For a time it was thought it would be better for only married women to act, as they were thought pure and would not be so open. However not the case…- Prologues: moment when actor addressed the audience to give insight to play.. Itwas found that it was better if woman made this…there speech was often very suggestive….- Idea of women on stage being prostitutes: perpetuated by the playwrights, and became something that was expected.- Some of the actresses were treated as “celebrities” people wanted to know all the gossip about the popular actresses:o Anne Bracegirdle, Aphra Behn, and Nell Gwynn (known for her wit).o- The Playwrights: - example:o The Country Wife- stereotypes used came from real life.
