Mahavira was a contemporary Buddha who accepted the Vedic ideas of liberation from the cycle of rebirth and Karma and rejected rituals that were violent and the Brahmins, the priestly class. There was no idol-worshipping allowed. How do Jains live?Jains live ethically and are against violence on all living creatures including plants, animals and bugs. They usually run their own business. Jains tend to thrive in the jewelery business. They eat a very vegetable diet and never eat out. Vegetables like onions and potatoes are forbidden because when they are picked, it kills the entire plant.How do they treat nature? Earth, water, fire, nigoda, and plants are touch only. These have a life span of 12 years. Insects, spiders are touch, taste, and smell only. These have a lifespan of 49 days. Butterflies, flies and bees are touch, taste, smell and see only. These have a life span of 6 months. Birds, reptiles, mammals, humans, gods, and demons are touch, taste, smell, see and hear. These are sentient and non sentient. The soul exists, it is eternal. What is the soul?A worldly soul is bounded by karma. Karma is the cause of re-birth. Karma can be destroyed andthose who destroy karma can attain Moksha.How are men and women treated? Men and women are treated differently. While monks are naked during teaching, nuns have to be covered in plain white garments.SwadhyayisThey believe in reincarnation of non-humans (avatara). They believe in karma, vegetarianism and non-violence. The Swadhyayis was originated after some discourses of some Hindu texts.Bishnoi:They had 29 rules and 120 overlapping statements.
