science and engineering students It covers analytic geometry and the calculus of algebraic and transcendental functions including limits derivatives differentials and an introduction to integration along with their applications This is the first semester of a 3 semester calculus sequence MTH 173 MTH 174 and MTH 277 A graphing calculator is required A complete description of the course content and objectives may be found on the NVCC website Prerequisites are 4 yrs of high school math Algebras I II Geometry and Trig and or MTH 166 The prerequisite material will not be covered in class An algebra review is available in the book s Appendix and on Math XL DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITHOUT THE PREREQUISITES Textbook Calculus Early Transcendentals by Briggs and Cochran Used daily in class Math XL Student Access Code Comes with a new textbook Can also be purchased alone either online through Pearson or in the bookstore We will do homework and class communication through MathXL Blackboard I can only discuss grades via emails from your Blackboard accounts Go to http www nvcc edu novaconnect student login htm to find your username and password and to login Graphing Calculator Any TI 83 or TI 84 model will work well You are welcome to use a different brand but I will not be able to assist you The library and Math Center have calculator resources and calculators on reserve and Blackboard has a tutorial available Cellphones PDAs wireless capable devices TI 89s and other CAS type calculators will NOT be allowed Memories may be wiped before exams Math is a sequential subject each topic builds on the one before You cannot miss class without falling seriously behind Schedule doctors appointments vacations etc outside class time Be on time Acceptable reasons for missing class include death in the family surgery and an illness requiring you to remain within 10 feet of the facilities Documentation may be requested for any absence Documentation WILL be requested if you miss an exam Makeup exams are more difficult and should be avoided if possible Math is not a spectator sport Do it or you won t learn it Copy the problem show all your work keep homework in a folder or binder and bring to class You will occasionally be asked to put problems on the board I will never single you out for this activity There will always be multiple students at the board and this is a collaborative learning effort THERE WILL BE NO RIDICULE IN THIS OR ANY CLASS THAT I TEACH You will also be required to do homework on MathXL In class quizzes may be announced or unannounced and there will be no retakes or makeups given No late quizzes on Math XL will be accepted No exceptions I don t accept late work except on a case by case basis with proper documentation Exams Grade Replacement Option Grades There will be three major exams If you missed an exam AND YOU PROVIDED ACCEPTABLE DOCUMENTATION you have the option to take a makeup exam or replace the exam with the Final Exam grade Makeup exams will be significantly more difficult so only miss if you absolutely cannot help it There are no retakes on exams If you have missed no more than three class periods and you took all three exams then the final exam grade will replace your lowest exam grade provided the final is higher This can only help you not hurt you The final is quite often higher than one of the regular exams especially when you have that one test that you just didn t get at first or that one really bad day when you went blank If you 1 missed an exam but did not provide documentation or if you 2 took all three exams but missed three or more classes your exam grade will be a 0 The final will NOT substitute in these cases The typical grading scale is used 90 100 A 80 89 B 70 79 C 60 69 D your calculator and connect your TI calculator so you can download TI apps capture your screen image and most important BACKUP YOUR PROGRAMS TO A DISK Remember I may wipe your calculator s memory
