scidiv math You should have taken MTH 166 at NVCC or a comparable precalculus with trigonometry course elsewhere and qualified for MTH 173 on our placement test If this is your first college level math course you should have had 4 years of high school math including Algebra I and II Geometry Trigonometry and a course on functions This is the first semester of a 3 semester calculus sequence MTH 173 MTH 174 and MTH 277 for engineering mathematics computer science and science majors A college course outline of objectives for MTH 4 is available in the Science Division and on the web site http www nvcc edu academic coursecont summaries prefixesM html MTH TEXT and SUPPLIES Calculus Early Transcendentals fifth edition by Stewart required A tutorial CD and Student Solutions Manual that accompanies the text are both optional BRING A GRAPHING CALCULATOR EACH DAY TO CLASS The strongly preferred models are the TI 83 Plus or TI 84 Plus Instruction on these models will be provided For all other models you will have to refer to the user s manual If the calculator presents a hardship please discuss it with me Students may not share calculators Calculators using a symbolic CAS such as the TI 89 will not be allowed while taking tests Bring your text graphing calculator and all completed homework assignments to class each day for the quizzes The Math Center hasTI 83 tutorials on video tape for graphing calculators Links to tutorials are available on my web page If the calculator presents a hardship please discuss it with me There are calculators on reserve in the library and in the Math Center for use while you are on campus TESTS There will be two types of tests in this course The first type is gateway tests You will not be allowed any calculators on gateway tests They will cover only symbolic operations i e differentiation and integration techniques Each will have 10 questions no partial credit will be awarded and you must score at least 80 on each gateway If you don t score at least 80 you must take a second test on the same material Your maximum grade on the second test will be 80 Retakes will be given in the testing center and must be completed within a week from when I pass back the unsatisfactory test If you don t take a required retake within the allotted week your grade will be 0 If you miss a scheduled gateway you must take the retake with a maximum grade of 80 If you don t take a required retake your grade for that gateway will be zero The second type of tests cover theory and applications These include 4 chapter tests and the comprehensive final exam You may use calculators that don t use a symbolic CAS You may not share calculators I do not lend calculators If you have to miss any chapter test you must notify me in advance of the scheduled test in order to take a makeup test However you should expect that a makeup will be substantially more difficult and different than the original You may take only one makeup chapter test If you miss two or more chapter tests your grade will be a zero on each All makeup tests will be given the week of April 30 GRADES The 10 point grading scale is used 90 100 A 80 89 B 70 79 C 60 69 D below 60 F Your grade will be determined by the percentage of the total points you earn from the following 4 tests 3 Gateway tests Homework quizzes Written assignments Comprehensive final exam 100 points each 100 points each Points vary Points vary 100 points POINTS 400 points 300 points 100 points 100 points 100 points 1000 points PERCENT 40 30 10 10 10 100 If you are present for all tests and quizzes 10 points will be added to your lowest test score at the end of the semester Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester ATTENDANCE The importance of class attendance cannot be over emphasized Regular attendance is a must Math class should be your only commitment for your class time Schedule doctor visits vacations and other things for other times In the event that you must miss class avoid falling behind by completing the missed assignment described in the attached class schedule THERE ARE NO MAKEUP QUIZZES A missed quiz is a zero IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU NOT MISS ANY TESTS Exceptions for extenuating circumstances will be handled on an individual basis You must contact me before the scheduled test There are a number of ways to do so listed on this syllabus I have the option of withdrawing you for poor or erratic attendance QUIZZES Quizzes will be scaled to total 100 points These may be in class or take home individual or group closed book open book or open notebook There may be problems from the book board overhead projector a written handout TI Navigator or your homework notebook You may be asked to just copy a selection of problems that you have completed for homework Reading quizzes on assigned sections may also be given You should be prepared every day for any of these types of assignments Read each day s section before attending class bring all homework completed and organized in a notebook so that you may find specific problems and bring a graphing calculator and your text every day I do not lend calculators and students may not share calculators WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS will be scaled to total 100 points These assignments may require a computer Specific instructions will be given with each written assignment HOMEWORK Attached is the class schedule that indicates the section from the text that will be discussed in class and the homework assignment for that section The homework is due the following day In each class you may ask about homework problems before proceeding with new topics Note that homework is not collected or graded but you cannot expect to progress or to complete the course objectives without conscientiously completing homework assignments You may be asked to put completed homework problems on the board for discussion You should plan on spending at least two hours outside class for each one hour in class
