MTH 173 051L Calculus with Analytic Geometry I Fall 2011 Tuesdays and Thursdays 4 00 6 20 PM Room RES 353 Instructor Cathy Bobzien Home phone 703 758 9609 Mailbox Room 303 e mails Nova cbobzien nvcc edu Home cdbobzien aol com Office Hours An hour before class or by appointment Text and Supplies Calculus early Transcendentals sixth edition Briggs and Cochran required You are required to have a graphing calculator and to bring it with you to each class The preferred model is a TI 83 or TI 84 Prerequisites Course Objectives Prerequisites for MTH 173 are 4 years of high school math including Algebra I and II Geometry and Precalculus including Trigonometry At NVCC the prerequisite course is MTH 166 MTH 173 is the first semester of a three semester calculus sequence 173 174 and 277 for engineering mathematics computer science and science majors A detailed list of course objectives can be found on the college website The Loudoun math web page is www nvcc edu loudoun scidiv math Attendance The importance of regular attendance cannot be overemphasized I have the option of withdrawing you from the class or lowering your grade for poor or erratic attendance In the event that you must miss a class avoid falling behind by reading the appropriate sections and completing the assignment for that class before the next class Try to have a classmate whom you can contact in order to get additional class notes Also be sure to check the Blackboard site for any course updates If you must miss class on a test night you must contact me before that class and arrange to take a make up test in the Testing Center before the next scheduled class meeting There are normally no make ups for quizzes Absences due to extenuating circumstances will be handled on an individual basis preferably in advance of the absence Homework You cannot expect to progress satisfactorily without conscientiously completing the homework assignments Homework may be collected and will be checked for effort and completeness Be sure to show all your work on your homework papers including sketches of graphs from your calculator etc This will make your papers more helpful to you for study purposes You are encouraged to form study groups But do not just copy another student s work This will not help you in the long run Before beginning an assignment read carefully the related text material Put the ideas into your own words as you read Always have pencil and paper in hand Remember math is not a spectator sport Plan on spending two hours outside of class working on the course for every hour in class Be sure to make note of any problems you have on the assignment so that they can be discussed at the beginning of the next class Quiz and test problems will often relate to the homework problems Test and grading details Grades will be figured on total points earned There will be four tests and a comprehensive final exam each worth 100 points There will also be several quizzes These are generally worth 10 50 points each Many will be on line through Blackboard Some quizzes will be open notes an excellent reason to keep up with your homework Regular homework assignments will be worth 2 points each Tests will be closed book closed note For the final exam you will be allowed to prepare one 3 x 5 index card with formulas or notes to help you For your semester grade a ten point scale will be used A 90 100 B 80 89 C 70 79 D 60 69 F Below 60 Grades will be recorded in the Gradebook on Blackboard To communicate with me about grades or any personal issues by e mail you must use your NVCC VCCS e mail account For special announcements supplementary assignments and materials etc check the Blackboard site regularly http learn vccs edu or through the college website Withdrawals The last day to withdraw from a class this semester without grade penalty W instead of F is October 31st If you choose this option the responsibility for the paperwork is yours Extra Help In class discussion before class or by appointment Free tutoring service is provided on campus Go to the Counseling Center LR 253 for more information The Math Center is located in Room LR 204 Mon Tues Wed Thur 9 30 AM 9 00 PM Friday 9 30 AM 6 45 PM Saturday 9 00 AM 1 00 PM The teachers in the Math Center can help you when they are not helping their own self paced developmental math students Disabilities If you have a disability of which I need to be aware for classroom and or testing accommodations please meet with me privately to discuss it Ethical behavior Ethical behavior is expected at all times If you are found to be cheating on any test or quiz you will receive a grade of zero for that assessment Repeat offenders will fail the course
