Class Meetings: Wednesdays 7:05-9:55PM at T181 Period: [1/17/2012-----5/10/2012] Lab Hours: WF 5:00-7:00PM L108 Computer Center: L108 Testing Center: C114  COURSE DESCRIPTION: The student will develop the ability to use computer-based technology in communicating, acquiring information and solving problems. Additionally, the student will evaluate the effects and implications of information technology on various aspects of society. COSC 1300 may not be applied towards a computer science major or minor. COSC 1300 or any higher level COSC course will meet the core curriculum and/or Associate in Arts or Associate in Sciences requirement. This course will fulfill DCCCD's degree requirements only if this course has been successfully completed and the date of completion does not exceed 10 years. (3 Lec., 4 Lab.)  PREREQUISITES - Developmental Reading 0093 or English as a Second Language (ESOL) 0044 or have met the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standard in Reading. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK:2  Concepts Text: CMPTR, Pinard/Romer, First Edition, 2012, Course Technology, Cengage Learning, BUNDLE ISBN 1133220908 includes SAM Training  Additional Materials: Scantrons, Flash drives, and other materials may be required. The instructor will provide information regarding when these materials will be needed. Developmental Courses: The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a statewide program designed to ensure that students enrolled in Texas public colleges and universities have the basic academic skills needed to be successful in college-level course work. The TSI requires assessment, remediation (if necessary), and advising of students who attend a public college or university in the state of Texas. The program assesses a student’s basic academic skills in reading, writing, and math. Passing the assessment is a prerequisite for enrollment in many college-level classes such as English 1301/1302, History 1301/1302, Math 1414, etc. Students who do not meet assessment standards may complete prerequisite requirements by taking developmental courses in the deficient area and passing them with a grade of C or higher. In some cases retesting will also be required. It is up to each student to be aware and informed about requirements that are subject to change. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:  Discuss computer and communication terminology.  Evaluate the effects and implications of computers and communication technology on society.  Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of technology on the individual’s privacy, security, lifestyle, work environment, standard of living, and health.  Gather information for decision-making.  Participate in global communities using available technology  Create quantitative and qualitative date presentation. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:  Explain the basic concepts and vocabulary of computer information systems.3  Describe the role and functions of software and systems in meeting the needs of organizations  Discuss the impact of computer technology on society  Demonstrate a working knowledge of PC operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, charts, and integration by using a microcomputer to solve specific problems. ASSIGNMENTS: Exercises, projects, labs, and other activities will be periodically assigned to reinforce the material in the text. All lab assignments require the use of a computer. Computer-based assignments can be completed on campus or at home, if you have a home PC with the appropriate software. There will be lab assignments to be completed with SAM2010. Topics for Lab Assignments: Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint Chapters to be covered: Part 1: Concepts (Chapters 1-3) Networks and the Internet (Chapters 4-6) Part 2: Windows 7 (Chapters 7-8) Office 2000 (Chapter 9) Part 3: Word 2010 (Chapters 10-12) Excel 2010 (Chapters 13-16) Part 4: Access 2010 (Chapters 17-19) PowerPoint 2010 (Chapters 20-21) Chapter coverage can be changed during the semester. Obtaining Final Course Grades Using eConnect Final Grade Reports are no longer mailed. Convenient access is available online at www.econnect.dcccd.edu. Use your identification number when you log onto eConnect, an online system developed by the DCCCD to provide you with timely information regarding your college record. Your grades will also be printed on your Student Advising Report, which is available in the Admissions Office.
