Thomson Course Technology Other course materials will be posted online Please print and read the appropriate materials ahead of time Attendance Attendance in this class is mandatory Class is also the official place for announcements Should you miss a class please obtain the lecture and announcements from one of your colleagues Although I will post lecture materials these materials by themselves will not cover all that is discussed They are intended to be used as supplemental material to aid you in taking notes and studying If you should miss more than 6 hours of lecture or lab or a combination thereof throughout the semester you may be dropped from the class at my discretion You are required to attend lab Grading Final Grades will be assessed on a straight scale based on the student s proficiency in the topics outlined above Occasionally I will scale the grades at the end of the semester if I feel it will result in a more appropriate or fair assessment of the class I will not however adjust grades for a student that did not complete all of their work or skipped a quiz lab homework or exam or for any student s that is are involved in academic dishonesty Success in this 40 D 60 69 9 Final 20 F Below 60 0 Assignments Labs Throughout the quarter there will be several assignments and labs All work must be printed with a coversheet and stapled Coversheets are provided as the first sheet of the assignment or lab You are required to complete the information requested name class CS1A and class times days and times we meet for lecture Please print legibly Additionally I may on occasion assign in class work these are usually short exercises that are provided on the lecture slides In class work may be checked and may count towards points on an assignment or lab it won t be posted as it is assigned in class if you miss class be sure to get this information from one of your studybuddies or another classmate Please do not start your assignments at the last minute When you start early you ensure that you have enough time to complete the assignment and you have time to ask questions should you have a problem Assignments towards the end of the semester tend to be more time consuming Please plan your schedule accordingly Page 2 of 5 CS1A Syllabus Assignments Assignments may be completed at home or in the Open Lab CS lab SM348 All necessary software is installed on the machines in the labs and the lab aides are there to help you if you have any questions Check the learning center schedule for the semester so that you can schedule time in to complete the assignments on time Although I encourage all students to complete the assignments in the CS lab you may complete assignments at home provided you have the appropriate software if needed For programming assignments students are required to use the eclipse integrated development environment IDE Unfortunately we do not have the resources to provide technical support for the installation of any software The unavailability of required software on your computer will not serve as an excuse for late assignments All assignments are to be completed individually without the help or assistance of classmates or other students except lab aides If you need assistance you may get help from a lab aide or an instructor only Labs All labs are weighted equally in terms of grading All labs except the partner labs are to be completed individually Labs will be handed out in lab and due in lab or during the next lab class meeting unless otherwise specified during your lab time If you miss lab you will miss your lab assignment Labs cannot be made up All partner labs must be completed in the CS labs SM346 or SM 348 Partners You will have the opportunity to engage in pair programming as part of this course When working on labs designated as partner labs both you and your partner must be co located while completing the work Occasionally partner labs will take more time than allotted in your lab section In these cases it will be necessary for you to arrange a time to meet with partner in the CS lab If your partner does not show up within 10 15 minutes of your arranged time you may complete the lab on your own and your partner will receive 0 points on the lab NOTE if you fail to show up at the time you arranged with your partner you will receive 0 points for the lab Please note that you will be required to work with a partner in this class and will have to arrange time with other students to meet to complete these labs
