started they were just selling candy wafers but they evolved to have advice for brides on them o This is where the tradition of wearing white wedding dresses started Necco later evolved their candy railroad tracks Railroad accounting railroad going through different states had different taxes and laws that had to be accommodated for Architecture designing and building railroad cars Building the railroad wouldn t go through the South and the South knew that new areas for settlers would open up and new states would not be slave states thus diminishing the South s power in Congress Southerners were also in the land business and knew that the new areas in the west would depreciate their land value so they fought the transcontinental railroad After the Civil War the North launches construction of the transcontinental railroad since the south can t fight it anymore o 2 railroads were created the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific Central Pacific Begins in Central California o Leland Stanford founds Stanford University which is named for son who died Leland Stanford Jr When it started it was a College o Couldn t call it Jr because it would be a junior college university o Has to deal with Mountain ranges Union Pacific Begins in Omaha o Deals with desolate flat lands Indians and bringing in all materials Oliver Kelley Silver Movement William Jennings Bryan AMH 2020 0001 page 4 The railroad paid for every mile plotted and gave a plot of land to workers The total acreage given away is equivalent to size of Texas The railroad brought in immigrants and settlers with almost every mile laid Most immigrants and settlers came in on flat cars in addition to prostitutes materials to build saloons brothels and other impurities o The stuff that came in on flat cars led to flat cars being called Hell on wheels The railroad changed everything about life o It created a national economy and forced changes for everyone o One such change was railroad time a standard time from them In 1862 Indians in Minnesota kill 100s of settlers who encroached on their land Settlers want Indians to live on reservations and to settle down like the settlers o Indians don t want to do that but settlers try to force them to settle Give Oklahoma to Indians as Indian territory but then find gold and oil in Indian territory AMH 2020 0001 page 5 and force them to move Claiming Oklahoma land go claim land People lined up at eastern edge of Oklahoma and waited for the sound of cannon fire to Oklahoma Sooners were the people who went into claim land before cannon fire Military forces Indians onto reservations The buffalo produce everything Indians need to live on Can make teepee from coat along with clothing Bone tools and weapons Meat sustenance After the Civil War the government launches a buffalo killing program o Government knows that once buffalo are dead Indians can t roam free and have to go the reservation o Government pays a bounty for killed buffalo Buffalo are dumb They wander into stores homes and other random places they don t belong and just stand around o 15 million buffalo were hunted down to just a couple hundred in 20 years o Buffalo coat is similar to dirty smelly steel wool Every woman wanted a buffalo coat in 1870s and 1880s The train would take men out to middle of Nebraska so that they could hunt buffalo Men could balance gun in train window
