Evolutionary Biology BIOL 3350 Dr Lisa Rapaport Lecture 12 Part 1 Notes Kin Selection and Social Behavior I Beldings Ground Squirrels A Females stay close to homes their entire lives B Females live close to their female relatives C Males grow up and disperse into other colonies so they spend most of D They spend a lot of time sitting up on their hind feet and scanning the their lives not around relatives area for predators E Whistling callers are attacked 2 of the time when they call and 28 of the time when they do not call safer if one gives the whistle than if one does not give the whistle F When a ground squirrel gives a trill call it is attacked 8 of the time when they do not give a trill call to a predator they are only attacked 4 of the time more risky and dangerous to give a trill call relatives benefit from trill calls G The more closely related a female Beldings ground squirrel is to another the more likely the female will call when that relative is out in the open White Fronted Bee Eaters A Often times nests fail B Those who are widowed or whose nests have failed are usually the ones who go help others raise their offspring since they have nothing else to do for the rest of the breeding season C Males help more often than females D This method is called cooperative breeding II 1
