Freeman and J. C. Herron, Evolutionary Analysis. 5th Edition, Prentice-Hall Inc., Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, (2014). (http://www.clemson.edu/campus-life/campus-services/book-store)Articles: Article pdf’s provided in Blackboard OTHER REQUIRED MATERIALS:1. Top Hat Monocle subscription for at least 4 months (https://tophat.com/). Detailed instructions for using Top Hat Monocle can be found here, and a quick start guide is located at the end of this document. Our Top Hat web address and course id is: http://app.tophat.com/e/0505982. You must bring a cell phone, wifi-enabled tablet or wifi-enabled laptop to class each day for use with Top Hat Monocle. Class participation via Top Hat Monocle contributes toward your grade (see below).COURSE OBJECTIVES1. Survey patterns in the history of life and the diversity of the living world.000000002. Examine the forces that have generated these patterns and the nature of the evidence from which we have reconstructed the patterns and deduced their mechanisms.3. Appreciate the discovery of evolution as one of the greatest intellectual revolutions in human history.LEARNING GOALS1. Students will be able to describe the mechanisms of evolutionary change and recognize examples of each force of evolution.2. Students will be able to critically evaluate experimental evidence of evolutionary change and design experiments to test hypotheses regarding evolutionary change.REQUIRED WORK:Three 75-min. examinations: two during the semester and the third, a non-cumulative exam at the end of the semester during the scheduled final examinationperiod, Thursday, April 30th, from 8:00 – 10:30 a.m. No exemptions of the final exam are allowed.Outside reading assignments will also be made available on BLACKBOARD. Questions over material from these reading assignments will be included on in-classquizzes and the exams.Problem sets serve as a guide for learning the types of problems that will be encountered on the exams and will be posted on BLACKBOARD. If you do not practice these problems, you will not do well on exams. The Instructor (during office hours) and Co-Instructor (during weekly review sessions) will provide help in working problems. Answer keys for all problem sets will be made available on BLACKBOARD prior to scheduled exams.Class Participation: Attendance in class is mandatory. You cannot learn the material or earn a grade of ‘A’ in the course without attendance and participation in lecture. Each class will offer the opportunity to earn participation points through in-class activities, or short out-of-class assignments that are due at the beginning of class. The assignments and in-class activities will constitute your class participationgrade and class participation points will be awarded (a total of 200 points). You can miss up to 3 of these activities without penalty (only 20/23 will count towards your grade). There will be no excused absences or make-ups of these activities/assignments points so please plan your schedules accordingly. There is also no extra credit for completing all 23, but participation in all of these assignments/activities will improve your scores on the three exams. You can only hurt your grade by missing class. Earning these points will be based upon 1) attendance during the lecture that a participation activity is assigned and 2) acceptable performance on the activity or assignment. Class attendance and participation will be gauged through the use of Top Hat Monocle software (see instructions for purchasing and using Top Hat Monocle on page 8 at end of syllabus).Changes to the syllabus, course content or scheduling will be announced in class.GRADING AND GRADE DETERMINATION:Each exam will be scored out of 100 possible points for a total of 300 points. Class participation activities/assignments will total 200 points. The number of points you earn out of 500 total points will determine your final grade. The grading scale, based on total points earned, is shown below:450-500 = A 400-449 = B 350-399 = C 349-300 = D 0-299 = F2WEEKLY REVIEW OPPORTUNITIESWe are very fortunate to have a Graduate Co-Instructor (Ms. Brett Frye), who will conduct weekly review sessions. Evolutionary biology is a computationally challenging subject and review of concepts, running computer simulation models, and working mathematical problems is essential to understanding concepts in evolution. To facilitate your learning and provide outside of class assistance with review questions, problems and out-of-class assignments, Ms. Frye will hold weekly review sessions, with an extra session each week before an exam. These will be held:Every Tuesday: 5:00 – 7:00pm in 220 Long HallPlus Thursdays the week before an exam: 5:00 – 7:00pm in 220 Long HallIMPORTANT POLICY STATEMENTS:Missing Class – Participation ActivitiesYou are responsible for everything covered in lectures and assigned readings (readings and lecture material do not always have extensive overlap). If you must miss class, you are responsible for obtaining the information from a classmate. I do not take daily attendance, but some material covered in class may not be part of the assigned reading and will NOT be made available on BLACKBOARD. In addition, if you miss class on a day in which class participation points were awarded, there is NO way to make up these points. Thus, missing class may cause you to miss material that will appear on exams and hurt your final grade in the course.Missing Class – Scheduled Exams 1, 2 or 3If you must miss a scheduled exam and you provide me with a documented valid excuse, you must notify me no later than one week before the exam that you will be absent on exam day, and you will be allowed to take the exam early. If you miss an exam due to an unanticipated illness or family emergency, you must notify me as soon as possible following the exam and I will
