AMH 2020 0001 page 1 April 2 2015 Civil Rights Every ethnic group has been discriminated against in the history of the United States African American contributions to US has been overlooked or reduced in value Blood Plasma Stop light African American inventors McCoy African American whose products were amazing o Asked for Real McCoy product Segregation begins in 1890s African Americans are mostly Republicans initially So they retain most of their rights because they won t have any real influence if they vote Populism allows African Americans to see that they have more in common with poor whites state governments threats bribes etc o Government is afraid of poor blacks and poor whites coming together to take over o Blacks are prevented from voting by the use of poll taxes limited time to vote Jim Crow Laws Jim Crow is a white entertainer from 1800s sing Black folk songs o Jim Crow was stage name o Used burnt cork to paint face black and pretend he was black to play a banjo and o est Literacy test to deny African Americans the right to vote Literacy test was ridiculous test that wiped Blacks from voting polls AMH 2020 0001 page 2 o Lousiana 1836 100 000 voters 1 300 voters were left after Jim Crow Segregation established o Separate entrances whites couldn t do things for black and visa versa Ray Charles was thrown out of school for the blind Sat by window so he could jump out when fight started Refused to learn to play the guitar so they threw him out o Policy of State of Florida was to give all blind black children guitar and lesson to prepare them to beg for money on street corner Zoning restrictions established for segregation Begins in the south and spreads to north as far as Baltimore and Maryland Ghettos stem from this Homer Plessy a black man in Louisiana with very fair skin o Most think he is white o One drop law If you have one drop of African American blood you are African o Decided to challenge Jim Crow laws and gets arrested 1896 his case reaches the American legally in the south Supreme Court o Supreme says Separate but equal leads to white kids getting new things and black kids getting old things Black kids had shorter academic year so they could work the field Separate but in no way equal Law of the land into 1950s AMH 2020 0001 page 3 o African Americans had some rights under Republican presidents because Republican politicians wanted southern support and African Americans were present to give it o 1913 1921 African American worse off than they were in slave times Banned from jury duty and couldn t testify against whites Exception comes in Mary Fallon case Black man allowed to testify against Jewish business man Jew is eventually lynched for crime he didn t commit Wilson had government segregated o as simple as a black man talking to a white woman a lynching could occur Lynchings 95 98 1890 1918 8 500 recorded lynchings in the south seldom involve real crimes Sometimes recorded in the South Popular prejudice everyone doesn t like a person o a lynchable offense Go on into the 60s Apopka had the most violent Klan in the Nation o Economic rather than actual crime
