What did Valikhanov hope for the Qazaq people to gain from the Russian Empire As Dostoevsky wrote in his letter to Valikhanov Chokan is the first Kazakh to be educated in the European way Hence he had the best of both worlds European and Central Eurasian It is clear from his two texts first is about Islam in the steppe and the second is his Notes on Levshin In the first reading Valikhanov points out drawbacks in the social institutions of the Qazaq people Moreover he wants the Russian Empire to remove them For example he mentions the United States built schools and raised funds for the Indians which benefited the government by ceasing the Indian wars Valikhanov wanted the same actions to be taken towards the Kazakh people which would increase the number of educated people in the steppe At the same time Valikhanov is concerned about healthcare in the steppe The lack of qualified doctors resulted in the death of many people and the increasing number of charlatans The next major social institution is religion According to Valikhanov s words legends epic poems jurisprudence and legal customs of the Qazaq people are suffering from the presence of Islam in the steppe and being called devilish Hence the Russian Empire should take some policies regards to the role of religion among the Qazaqs In conclusion it is safe to say that Valikhanov hoped that the Qazaq people would get what he got from the Russian Empire education health and identity He tried to work for the benefit of both empire and central Asian people
