Week 2 DQ1 Developing Emotional Intelligence in Leadership Do you think it is appropriate for a leader to spend time developing a team s emotional intelligence EI Why or why not What would be the advantages disadvantages Discuss specific circumstances influences parameters that may impact a leader s decision to spend time fostering the development of EI Your initial post must contain a minimum of 250 300 words Respond to two of your classmates postings From a personal view I think is very important that a leader spend time developing team s emotional intelligence Any organization that has anything to do with the public needs to make sure that its workers are capable of doing whatever it is that they do Emotional Intelligence involves understanding ones emotions and the emotions of those that are being served It also teaches one how to deal with their own emotions and also how to deal with the emotions of others One other thing that emotional intelligence training does is it teaches a worker how to become self motivating Leadership involves creating appropriate change and not merely maintaining the status quo Daft 2008 Some of the advantages of EI training is that the individual should learn how to become a better communicator with the public and coworkers They will learn how to be become empathetic to others They will also gain knowledge on becoming more productive with the anticipation that this knowledge will be used It is also believed that EI training will help to release stress both on the job and at home ultimately leading to a better person On e of the disadvantages of this training would be that the worker would have to be very careful not to over emphasize his or her perception of others The training does not make one an expert The leader will have to conduct the training with lots of discretion He or she must also be able to deal with the consequences of such training The needs of the organization should also be taken into account before administering the training Training should also be done according to the individual job needs The final results of such training should be made known very carefully The leader should always keep in mind that the outcome is not always what is expected so they should be flexible in expectations Daft R L 2008 The leadership experience 5th ed Mason OH Cengage
