Utilitarianism Quick Review Higher v Lower Pleasures Higher Altruism Lower Selfishness You must be willing to give up your own personal happiness for the greater good The need of the many outweigh the need of the few Spock Star Trek Unrealistic Many are not motivated by altruism Sanctions whether or not they are inclined to do so o Example External a set of rewards and punishments that motivate people to do the right thing Reward A cash reward a positive article in the paper etc Punishment A fine being publicly shamed jailed etc Internal Ultimate sanction culmination of conscience my feeling for humanity To be a good Utilitarian is to have made the world a better place from the time of your coming birth to the time of your leaving death The difference made does not have to be large it can be simple things throughout a lifetime Example being a good friend spouse etc being charitable
