AMH2020 B001 June 27th Chapter 27 Diplomatic Crises and Near Wars 1880s 1890s U S and Germany Possession of Samoan Islands in 1889 American and Germany navies near battle Separate parts American Samoan and German Samoan New Orleans lynching of 11 Italians in 1891 U S agreed to pay compensation U S and Italy U S and Chile U S and Canada escalate U S and Britain Two American sailors deaths in Valparaiso in 1892 Chileans agreed to pay an indemnity compensation People on the West coast were upset about possible war from Chile Dispute over seal hunting off the coast of Alaska threatened to Some Americans wanted more land in Canada and some didn t think we should have resolved the amount of land that we did Resolved by arbitration in 1893 British involvement in boundary dispute between British Guiana and Venezuela after gold discovery U S invoked Monroe Doctrine warning the British not to intervene and resolving to determine the true boundary themselves Eventually settled with arbitration process for resolution This is when Cleveland was president Hawaii Cuba Americans growing sugar and other plantations in Hawaii Native population were dying from diseases so they hired Asians to work on plantations and in companies Higher import duties on sugar in U S made it harder to sell Travel back and forth on rafts or sailboats 40 s and 50 s political agendas were to help Cuba gain independence and then make it a state Cubans were revolting in the 1890 s o Spain didn t allow Cubans to sell their goods to anybody else UNLESS their exports went through Spain o Began with blockades and sold goods to the United States sold cattle o Also good at running blockades and sailing 50 million in American investment in Cuba Teller Amendment self ruled NOT annexed to the U S Spanish America War 1888 very short war Gain Cuban dependence Treaty of Paris Cuba free Guam and Puerto Rico U S territories and the Philippines were sold to the U S for 20 million
