Lawrence Kohlberg 1927 1987 handout Stages of Moral Development see handout on blackboard number pertain to numbers on 1 Rewards show they did right while punishments discourage bad behavior 2 No longer stimulus response what happens to me if I do this 3 It is not just about me helping the group do what the group needs to do 4 Realization of the purpose of laws It is important for me to conform for not just my group but my country world etc 5 Beyond the mere obedience to the law deep seated ethical nature 6 At the deepest possible level you seek to understand morality ethics fully a Example Kant The Good Will the duty Categorical Imperative Jake and Amy Both eleven years old Young enough to know right and wrong Not old enough to fully start think abstractly Both not typically gender imprinted The Heinz Dilemma A poor immigrant whose wife has gotten cancer the drug to help her is 2000 dollars The pharmacist gets the drug for 200 What should Heinz do Should he steal the drug Jake Damn right a human life is worth more it is morally right o Justice is equity o Jake appeals to Kentian principles duty to preserve human life This shows near universal ethics Amy is asked the question and is hesitant o Letting his wife die is wrong but stealing is also wrong o Says Heinz should talk to the pharmacist o Amy fails the test Young boys were proven to have more of an advantage over young girls in moral thinking learning Carol Gilligan 1937 Justice as equity is only one way to look at justice Justice is caring Says Jake is trained in a mathematical form of justice Amy is trained in a social deliberation form of justice o Heinz going to talk to the pharmacist to try to work out a deal o This way satisfies everyone s standpoint Susan Bardo Susan Atherton Men and women do in fact have different but equal world views o Men rational mathematical o Women caring working it out together fairness to all involved parties Nothing to do with anything genetic natural it is cultural o There are a range of options that everyone can use an opportunity to integrate both equity and caring o Equity gives structure the drug o Caring looks at context meaning it is not automatically right for Heinz to steal
