Civil War Issues Lincoln vs South 1860 South said that they would secede of Lincoln won he won without a single vote from the South Lincoln said he wanted unity because he didn t want to lose the boarder states Already slave states stay slave states where slavery was it could stay Territories have the right to choose popular sovereignty States should have right to decide government should not be stronger than states President James Buchanan didn t do anything Fort Sumter Union Army 1861 needed more supplies Lincoln sent food South took fort OFFICIAL START OF CIVIL WAR Border States Maryland Delaware Missouri Kentucky Lincoln did not want to lose any more states to the confederate states of America North had many advantages lot more people immigrants more weapons trading rail roads navy blockade South had will to fight heart well trained generals more defensive no navy no money plan scared of slave uprisings and runaways Central government was needed to be successful Battle of Bullrun 1861 South won and made the North realize that the was serious Made south more arrogant McClellan moved slow and Lincoln fired him Battle of Antietam Creek Maryland 1862 Confederates lost battle this crushed hopes of Britain and France helping them Battle of Vicksburg 1863 North wanted to control the Mississippi River because it would split the confederate army into two North got Mississippi river Emancipitation Proclamation 1863 freed slaves only in rebelling states 1 North started to get more European support 2 Many blacks heard about Emancipation and left their farms and joined the Union Army Lincoln didn t believe in the government taking away people s property He believed they didn t have the right to tell a state what to do because a government shouldn t be stronger than a state Battle of Gettysburg 1863 South tried to fight offence and lost thousands of men Picket s charge sent all men charging through field towards Union soldiers who shot them South knew it was almost over Sherman s March general coming from Vicksburg Union army destroyed Southern houses and stole destroyed their moral hope Slavery as political issue slave states vs free states power in government Lincoln didn t like slavery he said those with slavery can remain that way Slavery as a military issue Southern man did not want slaves to join b c don t give them a gun Southerners felt it was their war to fight North didn t want blacks to take their jobs effects on North during war economically good economy money system and traded with Britain made lots of money from tariffs made selling goods to union army centrally planned more decisive decisions effects of South during war economically bad economy North destroyed rail roads and blockaded the waters No central bank Social effect on North made money less to worry about went to work and school Social effect on South whole way of life was destroyed many died
