The University of Alabama amidst their 50 year anniversary of desegregation found a scandal within the educational walls. It seems the Fraternity and Sororities still used discrimination against black and other minority memberships. The school paper published an article to this effect and the University found them embarrassed to say the least. To stereotype is to generalize (Myers). The prejudice or thought that black cannot serve in a fraternity or sorority is indicative of the social teachings in the south however this is only a part of the problem. The stereotype may come from, “unequal status breeds prejudice.” many may see the mentally ill as agroup of people held to an unequal status to normal people. In prejudice it may be beneficial to the group stereotyping about race, thus one psychological benefit of prejudice, or of any status system, is a feeling of superiority (Myers). These houses may be experiencing superiority because of the in group they represent. While prejudice is a negative attitude and discrimination is a negative behavior (Myers, 2012), students using the application process to enter into a sorority will find the question of which race they belong to a prerequisite. Based on some of the prejudice opinions of individualsworking for the Ruston housing authority, they displayed discriminate behavior toward applications, placing them in housing developments according to whether or not they were Blackor White. If we consider the source of prejudice to be unequal status, we can apply the concept ofWhite southerners during the nineteenth century believing that Black southerners were inferior inintellect, which helped white southerners to justify their proliferation of slavery (Myers, 2012). This prejudice opinion persists in the South, even to this day as evident in this article. Offering a limp but real argument for keeping black people out of Fraternities and Sororities.1Other possible explanations for the prejudice attitudes of the fraternities and sororities could be their view of themselves as the in-group and misdirected aggression. Self-esteem is gained whenwe connect ourselves with certain groups, in-groups, and we rate our group as superior to other groups (Myers, 2012). Combined with socialized opinions of minorities, this could provide a potent formula to create prejudice and discriminate practices against minorities. With the recent economic downturn for the whole country, the South was especially hard hit after Hurricane Katrina. Ethnic peace is easier to maintain during prosperous times (Myers, 2012).1http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2013/10/02/greek-life-sorority-alabama-racist-segregation-column/2912373/Myers, D.
