16.6 : Precipitation Q= reaction quotient (same equation as K) If: Q < K : the solution is unsaturated (more solute can dissolve)Q = K : the solution is saturated (additional solute won’t dissolve)Q > K : the solution is supersaturatedPREDICTING PRECIPITATION: A precipitate will form if: Q ≥ KIf Q < K then no precipitate will form. SELECTIVE PRECIPITAION: If a solution contains Mg2+ and Ca2+, and a small amount of NaOH is added: Mg(OH)2 (s) and Ca(OH)2 (s) will form. When only a small amount of NaOH is added, there is only enough OH for one ion to precipitate. The one with the smaller Ksp will form a precipitate first. Therefore, Mg(OH)2 has the smaller Ksp value so it will precipitate, and Ca(OH)2 will
