The reasonwhy Atalanta lost the race is because she was distracted by the ‘golden apples’ as described in Ovid’s story, to which Du Bois compares golden apples to represent greed and materialism, and how people in general have shifted their focus to mindless things and forgetting about their priorities. 2) Du Bois’ main theme is of the South and the slavery movement in comparison to the story of Ovid’s “Atalanta and Hippomenes”. Du Bois talks about how South is becoming more materialistic and losing its focus on the main task at hand. Ovidian story is relevant as in the story Atalanta was distracted by golden apples during the race, which Du Bois compares to greed and materialism in the South and that people will not find the success they want or
