COURSE OVERVIEW LEARNING GOALS OF MANAGEMENT 201 This course is designed to introduce students to the functions of business and the practice of business management. Specifically, students will expand their understanding of how a business works through the application of the business functions and will be exposed to career opportunities within each functional area discussed. Students will also be exposed to the language, concepts, and theories of modern management thinking and practice. Such exposure will help students better understand the practice of management and the organizations in which they work. In summary, the overall objectives for this course are: - To expose students to the basic concepts of business and career options in the field of business. - To give students an opportunity to obtain factual knowledge (terminology, concepts, facts) and fundamental principles about the practice of management2 COURSE REQUIREMENTS CLASS ATTENDANCE While there is no formal attendance policy, class attendance is necessary for a student to do well in this class. Class time will be used to discuss assigned reading, provide examples, and engage in a more detailed discussion of the topics introduced in the text. In addition, outside material will be introduced and discussed during class and students will be responsible for this material on the quizzes and examinations. If a student is unable to attend class, it is his/her responsibility to obtain the class material and announcements from a peer. Instructor or TA office hours may not be used to provide individual lectures on material missed during class absences; office hours are meant to be used to discuss class material that was not clearly understood by the student. It is also expected that students be on time and stay for the full class period. CLASS PREPARATION, PARTICIPATION, & QUIZZES Students are expected to prepare in advance for each class session by reading the assigned chapter from the text. Students are also expected to read the cover stories in the second (“Business and Technology”) section of the WSJ and any other readings assigned by the instructor and to be prepared to discuss these materials in class. During the course of the semester, students will be presented with short, 5-10 question quizzes to assess class preparation. Quizzes will be unannounced and can occur at any point during the class period. Responses will be recorded via clickers, scantrons or pen and paper. Students MUST correctly register their clickers at the beginning of the semester and bring it to every class. Occasionally, in-class activities will be used in place of a daily quiz but will count as a quiz grade. The lowest 2 quiz scores will be dropped. There are no make-up opportunities to complete missed quizzes or in-class activities- you must be present to participate and earn these points. If you have an emergency or conflict which prevents you from attending class on the day a quiz is given, that quiz grade can be used as one of your drops. Quizzes will account for 15% of a student’s final grade. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS Students will complete 3 homework assignments over the course of the semester (in addition to the weekly Aplia assignments). Homework assignments include the completion of a Career Development assignment, a SWOT analysis, and a WSJ article presentation. The instructor will provide more specific information about each assignment closer to their due dates. Assignments must be submitted on or before the due date and time. Late assignments will not be accepted. Assignments are due at the start of class and there are no provisions for making up any missed assignments. Graded homework assignments will account for 15% of the final grade. APLIA ASSIGNMENTS Students will complete an online Aplia assignment for each chapter in the text. Students may use their book to complete the Aplia assignments. All Aplia assignments MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE START OF CLASS on the day they are listed on the course schedule. The exact time it is due is up to the instructor’s discretion. It is recommended that students allow sufficient time to complete these weekly assignments and to allow for unforeseen complications such as computer problems or glitches. The lowest Aplia score will be dropped. There are no make-up opportunities to complete Aplia assignments. If you have an emergency or conflict which prevents you from completing your Aplia assignment, that one can be used as your one drop. Aplia assignments will account for 10% of the final grade. EXAMS There will be 3 exams, each of which will account for 20% of the final grade. The instructor will discuss the format of these exams closer to their administration. Exams #1 and #2 will be administered during the regularly-scheduled class period as noted on the course schedule; Exam #3 will be administered during final exam week as per the course schedule. Attendance on the day of the exams is mandatory. Please note the following UT policy regarding final exams: "Students are not required to take more than two exams on any day. The instructor of the last exam on that day must reschedule the student's exam during the final exam period. It is the obligation of students with such conflicts to make appropriate arrangements with the instructor at least two weeks prior to the end of classes.
