We expect our students to maintain the highest standards of professionalism in the classroom, in group settings, in the greater university community, and in related public settings. All that you do and say, and the way you present yourself either elevates or diminishes your professional image in the eyes of others.DISABILITY STATEMENTAny student who feels s/he may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact the Office of Disability Services privately to discuss his/her specific needs. Students will also be exposed to the language, concepts, andtheories of modern management thinking and practice. Such exposure will help students better understand the practice ofmanagement and the organizations in which they work. In summary, the overall objectives for this course are:- To expose students to the basic concepts of business and career options in the field of business.- To give students an opportunity to obtain factual knowledge (terminology, concepts, facts) and fundamental principles about the practice of management1COURSE REQUIREMENTSCLASS ATTENDANCEWhile there is no formal attendance policy, class attendance is necessary for a student to do well in this class. Class time will be used to discuss assigned reading, provide examples, and engage in a more detailed discussion of the topics introduced in thetext. In addition, outside material will be introduced and discussed during class and students will be responsible for this material on the quizzes and examinations. If a student is unable to attend class, it is his/her responsibility to obtain the class material and announcements from a peer. Instructor or TA office hours may not be used to provide individual lectures on material missed during class absences; office hours are meant to be used to discuss class material that was not clearly understood by the student. It is also expected that students be on time and stay for the full class period. CLASS PREPARATION, PARTICIPATION, & QUIZZESStudents are expected to prepare in advance for each class session by reading and studying the assigned chapter from the text. Students are also expected to read the cover stories in the second (“Marketplace”) section of the WSJ and any other readings assigned by the instructor and to be prepared to discuss this material in class. During the course of the semester, students will be presented with short, 5-10 question quizzes to assess class preparation. Quizzes will be unannounced and can occur at any point during the class period. Responses will be recorded via clickers, scantrons or pen and paper. Students MUST correctly register their clickers at the beginning of the semester and bring it to every class. Occasionally, in-class activities will be used in place of a daily quiz but will count as a quiz grade. The lowest 2 quiz scores will be dropped. There are no make-up opportunities to complete missed quizzes or in-class activities- you must be present to participate and earn these points. If you have an emergency or conflict which prevents you from attending class on the day a quiz is given, that quiz grade can be used as one of your drops. Quizzes will account for 15% of a student’s final grade.HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTSStudents will complete 3 homework assignments over the course of the semester (in addition to the weekly Aplia assignments).Homework assignments include the completion of a LinkedIn page, a SWOT analysis, and a wiki page. The instructor will provide more specific information about each assignment closer to their due dates. Assignments must be submitted on or before the due date and time. Assignment are due at the start of class and there are no provisions for making up any missed assignments. Graded homework assignments will account for 15% of the final grade.APLIA ASSIGNMENTSStudents will complete an online Aplia assignment for each chapter in the text. Students may use their book to complete the Aplia assignments. All Aplia assignments MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE START OF CLASS on the day theyare listed on the course schedule. The exact time it is due is up to the instructor’s discretion. It is recommended that students allow sufficient time to complete these weekly assignments and to allow for unforeseen complications such as computer problems or glitches.
