Family Transition300 years ago…- Families were responsible for the: economy, education, politics, and religion- Took care of the sick, mentally ill, & elderly- Policed & protected- Fought wars- Were responsible for the transfer of craft and job skillsFamilies Today- More isolated from each other, from family members and from the community- Rely on outside institutions for survival and growth- Have less functions and responsibilities than families from the past- Family as THE fundamental unit (serves many functions in society)- Family as one of many institutions within society (limited functions)- Diversity distinguishes today’s families from the pasto Today families are interracial (legal in 1967)o Religious diversity (still uncommon)o Social Class (rich, poor, middle-class)o Same-sex marriageso Adoptiono Divorce, Remarriage, Step-children & step-parentso Single parento Young parents/Old parents (later in life)Social Confusion- Who does what job?- If families don’t do it, who does?- Who takes responsibility for social problems?- What does the family do now? Social Confusion leads to:- Forgotten skills- Dependence on other institutions- HelplessnessThe three primary sources of change for the family **1. Changes in the economy2. Demographya. Reduction of marriage fertilityb. Aging population3. Change and transformation of women’s rolesFrontier house Reflection 1** Due February 6 thWomen’s Jobs:Cooking, keeping fire going, washing dishes, scheduling, de-feather the chicken, teach their daughters housekeeping, wash & make clothes, milk the cows, look modest when leaving the house, socialize with the neighbors, Men’s Jobs:Outdoors, control/keep livestock, feed/nurture livestock, build their homes, physical labor, protect the home, cut the wood, hunt for food, take care of legal matters (property documentation), “man of the house” (say what is done in the household, decides whats in the best interest for the home), 2015 Women:Dishes, vaccum, clean the home, grocery shopping, take care of kids, work, send kids to school2015 Men:take care of finances, take care of outside of house, home
