August 26th CLASSAmerican National Government American Polity: Basic Concepts in the Study of U.S. Government & Politics, Bond & Smith Ch.1 Serow & Ladd Ch. 4-6 Points for today -Politics/Government-Process/substance-Change in demographicsPopulation growth by region, race/ethnicity, age, religion .demographic graphs showing population: tolitarian system it matters where the majority of our people are = political cloud . Gained/Lost/ no change in representatives due to the 2010 Census, losing our gaining the political cloud.Rust Belt: industrial cities= northern, aren’t growing as fast except for Louisiana which lost due to Katrina .SC added one .Change in demographics in terms of race and ethnicity.it is currently designated for us but in 2020 it will be on us to designate it.in 2000 Hispanic out numbered black .in 2075 the whites will be a minority .Percent change in minority population by county 2000-2010.white no growth, dark blue growth.lots of minority growth in texas :Houston Dallas and San Antonio, Texas will shift back to democratic and if they swing republicans wont have a path to the white house .some in FlaHispanic Concentration 2010.they are the largest but don’t out number black voters.state like New Mexico majority minority.increased minority political cloud US Hispanic Population by Origin 2011.Almost 2/3rds are Mexican Americans.alot wont declare themselves as Mexican or Latino instead Mexican American .alot of Cubans live in datin Florida and was the one minority that voted republican and that’s changing Projected Percented of the US Population Aged 65 and over.looked at with Politics through social security, retirement and effects it has on the economy .people 65 and older vote at a much higher rate than people our age.the result is programs that help elderly is rising and programs that help children is dropping because the elderly is running America by voting more than any others.they are rising in numbers so it is putting a greater demand on the programs and a greater political cloud due to their organization.AARP: Americans Association of Retired People Religious Diversity .A large majority (83%) of Americans still identify themselves as some form of Christian .1600 different religious affiliations & denominations.16% are not religiously affiliated.Leading Church bodies graph show that normally church bodies associate themselves and tend to cluster together .Buddhist and Muslim were just added to CongressLanguage Diversity .10% or more Hispanic in some counties.French in the northTraditional Political SpectrumHow much power shouldthe government have over the economy SOCIALISMActive government control of major economic sectorsLIBERALISMPositive government action in the economy CONSERVATISMPositive government action to support capitalismLIBERARIANISMAlmost No regulation of theeconomyWhat should government PromoteEconomic equality, communityEconomic security, equal opportunity, social libertyEconomic liberty, morality,social orderTotal economic and social liberty-Ideology-Political Science v.
