unsatisfied and Mephistopheles the devil makes a deal with him If the devil can please Faust then he may have his soul Mountains When Faust stands on the mountains he sees a godlike women form In this scene Faust is seeking satisfaction and when he sees the feminine figure he begins to reminisce about his youth and thinks about unsatisfied he really is On lines 24 25 he says that he sees a long lost treasure of youth He views this womanly form as a treasure riches in the early dawn of love This is something so valuable that it goes beyond jewels and gold it s young love In other words he is in touch with a more powerful emotion When the devil see s this he needs to stop it because in order to have Faust s soul Faust must be satisfied and this wave of memories is doing the exact opposite The devil successfully interrupts Faust s thoughts about young love by reminding Faust that where he stands is the floor of hell Mephistopheles says this to him in order to These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute make him think about the geology of the planet instead of having these spiritual thoughts By doing so he gets Faust s attention and Faust asks the devil to guess what he wants The devil offers Faust political power like having control over a city but the problem with power in Faust s eyes is that someone is always trying to overthrow you The devil then offers him a palace filled with women aka a pleasure palace harem but Faust argues that he is not that kind of man Jokingly Mephistopheles offers him a mission to the moon and then suggests fame and Faust rejects these ideas as well Faust believes that what matters is the deed In other words it s not the pot of gold that matters but the journey there that does As Faust stands at the top of the mountains he sees the ocean before him and the way that the waves smash against the rocks and what not This angers Faust because the ocean has all this power and it achieves nothing He views it as a waste of energy and wants to conquer the ocean Faust wants to push the ocean back in order to build houses Real estate In simpler terms he desires to become a real estate developer This has already been done in the Netherlands and New Orleans In order to accomplish this one needs lots of equipment employees and permission from the government because they are in charge of the land In this case the government is the emperor With private property all countries claim some border of water as theirs During this time the emperor is facing a rebellion and needs to help him first bribe to get permission to push the ocean back Faust makes a deal with Mephistopheles where the devil will help Faust make a deal with the emperor and push back the ocean Open Country Years ago Baucis and Philemon operated a lighthouse near the ocean that Faust pushed back They ended up saving a wanderer by warning him that him and his crew were in danger The fact that Faust pushes the ocean back may seem like progress but it comes at a price Slaves toiled over the labor there was human sacrifice and the lighthouse now serves no purpose This relates to modern industrialization because this results in toxic waste coupled with physical consequences Faust is accused of being godless because he sorely wants Baucis and Philemon s hut and removes their purpose in life by pushing back the ocean Faust want s the couple s sand dune with the lighthouse Although he offers them a new home in the paradise that he has built on the ocean floor Baucis doesn t want it Philemon kind of does This relates to eminent domain where the best interest of society overrides the interest of those who suffer from losing land or something along those lines The government has the power to force people of land This has to do with weighing the benefits of the whole vs the benefits of a few Palace Although Faust has created a paradise now he wants the couple s house This goes to show that he ll never be satisfied Faust wants to retire on the sand dune because he can look over his palace there This is a problem because he has a constant desire for more No matter how much he has he always wants more That s all he thinks about Once again we must remind ourselves that in order to have his soul Mephistopheles must please Faust There are many consequences to Faust s insatiable wants This includes human suffering the death of Baucis and Philemon and of the wanderer In order to get Baucis and Philemon s house Faust has Mephistopheles to go to their house and kick them out but according to the devil the house catches on fire Baucis and Philemon die from shock and the wonderer is shot for resisting After the house catches on fire Faust now has the power to build his retirement home there Mephistopheles claims that these people died as a result of Faust s desires One would think that this would stop Faust from building his home there but Faust continues on Late night visitor in the palace Faust has a late night visitor the ghost of care because Faust doesn t care about his consequences If Faust cared he d stop with his real estate development and consider the consequences of his actions As a result the Ghost of care leaves a curse on Faust and leaves him blind This relates to the real world because businesses must continue to grow in order to survive They ll never be big enough The nature of industrialization is to continually grow and expand This is known as the beast of capitalism Outer Court After the ghost of care visits Faust he is left blinded but he doesn t need his eyes to continue with his plans because it s all in his head His mind will do all of the work Even after he is blinded his next project is to drain the swamp This will be his last project He runs out of projects to he decides to go for the swamp In other words it will never end Other Capitalism growth expansion These concepts are infinite concepts because we desire to expand infinitely God sends angels to rescue Faust from the hell because 1 The …
