EDP 363 1st Edition Lecture 4 Outline of Last Lecture I What is a myth II What is a value statement III Tidbit on Surveys Outline of Current Lecture I 3 Ways to Make Value Statements II Thought Paper Current Lecture I 3 Ways to Make Value Statements a The way you state values has tremendous effect on your relationships b There are 3 different ways to make value statements i 1 As if it were a fact to be verb 1 Examples a It is WRONG to b It is NOT GOOD to 2 Popular because you can get people to believe them and they wont question or doubt you a This can lead to confusion 3 Stating values this way can hurt a relationship ii 2 As a demand 1 Examples a You SHOULD b You MUST 2 Stating values this way can hurt a relationship 3 This is the most popular way people make value statements iii 3 As an opinion belief or preference 1 Examples a I don t LIKE b I don t BELIEVE c I PREFER not to d I PREFER you not to 2 This is the least common way to make value statements 3 Advantage to making value statements this way this is the only way that implies equality between two people These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute II a The other two ways imply superiority inferiority b The issue is that we don t actually want equality we want to have the upper hand and or get our way more often than our partner iv It would be useful to care about what the other person thinks in a relationship and only the 3rd way stating your values as opinions beliefs or preferences allows for that Thought Paper a Talk to someone you know not in this class b Explain to them the three possible ways to make value statements c Tell them the way you would prefer them to make value statements between the two of you d How did the conversation go e The paper can be hand written or typed f There is no minimum or maximum length g DUE the beginning of class on Tuesday February 3rd 2015
