Invertebrates are a critical role in most food webs, and it is important to study them because there are many things that we can learn from them and many things that we should be aware of when dealing with them.Current LectureBasic things you need to know about invertebrates:1. 98% of all animal species are invertebrates2. They can cause diseases and can sometimes be an invasive species that cause problems Some good examples of invasive species you should know: Zebra Mussels and the Asian Tiger Shrimp3. Invertebrates are sources for pharmaceuticals. Where classification started:1. Carl von Linné, also named Carolus Linnaeus was the man who was known as the father of taxonomy. 2. Carolus Linnaeus was a Swedish botanist and physician who published Systema Naturae,a guide to classifying organisms in hierarchical categories and using Latin binomials for species names.You MUST know how to properly classify organisms! Have to be written either in italics or underlined:Homo sapiens or Homo sapiensHomo is the genus name and the first letter must be capitalized, and sapiens is the species name and is written in all lower case letters. You must either italicize if you are typing, or underline if you are writing by hand. Butdo not do both! It will be counted wrong.Definitions to know:These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
